Final Results
LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Piecing together several historic efforts in the distance events and throwing disciplines, the Christopher Newport track & field teams wrapped up a solid weekend on Saturday at the Dr. Jack Toms Invitational at Lynchburg's Shellenberger Field and Toms Track.

Among the throwers,
Sarah Johnson won the discus and posted the third-best effort in program history after unleashing a 40.41-meter heave. Meanwhile, on the men's side,
Brendon Burrows and
Legend Hayes both made their mark in the shot put. Burrows fired a 14.12-meter effort, which ranks sixth all-time at CNU. Hayes followed with a 13.82-meter toss, which places him eighth on the all-time list.

Along with the historic efforts, Hayes won the hammer with a 49.70-meter showing, while Burrows took the discus with a 46.94-meter throw.
Hannah Shoemaker also led the way in the women's shot put after landing a 12.46-meter distance.

In running events,
Daniel Cretney and
Trejon Edmonds shined in the 3000-steeplechase. Cretney crossed the line first in 9:30.45. That ranks fourth on the program's all-time list. Seconds later, Edmonds finished in 9:41.33, which places him ninth in CNU history.

Rounding out the men's history-makers,
Dane Boegner won the 10,000 in 32:44.54, which moved him to seventh all-time at CNU. Meanwhile, the women were bolstered by
Monica Lannen and
Kathryn Wilson. Lannen won the 1500 and registered the sixth-fastest time at CNU with a 4:45.35 mark, while Wilson jumped to ninth all-time in the 10,000 after completing the race in 40:28.40.

Lannen also chipped in with a second-place showing in the 800 (2:18.51), and
Natalie Prye was the runner-up in the 5000 (19:54.03).
Kellie Hyde also won the open 1500 on Saturday with a 5:16.61 clocking.

Among other top performers on the women's side,
Jessica Brownell was fifth in the pole vault (2.90 meters), Johnson was fifth in the hammer (35.13 meters), and
Paige Travers starred in both the long jump and triple jump. The freshman was fourth in the triple with a 10.16-meter leap after finishing sixth in the long jump with a 5.11-meter effort. She also teamed with
Nina Lucas,
Victoria Neston, and
Hannah Bowden on a third-place finish in the 4x100-relay (51.02).

For the men,
Ryan Scott won the 110-hurdles in 14.87, while
Hunter Sutliff was the runner-up in the 400-hurdles (56.08).
Daniel Read also came in second in the 1500 on Friday (4:04.77) before
David Sandborn captured the title in the open 1500 on Saturday (4:13.53).

Derek Tay,
Rashon Walker, and
Brandon Berry also placed first in the 4x100-relay after posting a 42.23 clocking. Later, Tay finished third in the 100 (11.41), Walker was sixth in the 200 (23.05), and
Kurt Waller came in fourth in the 400 (49.74).
Marquise Murphy also shined in the open events on Saturday as the freshman was second in the triple jump (12.31 meters) and third in the long jump (5.94 meters).

Christopher Newport will return to action on March 31 when the Captains host the Blue & Silver Challenge at POMOCO Stadium.
