LA CROSSE, Wisc. -- Wrapping up a fantastic freshman campaign, Christopher Newport's
Dylan Filipowicz made his debut on the national stage with an appearance in the javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday morning at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.
Competing against the top performers in the nation, Filipowicz unleashed a 44.63-meter heave on his first attempt, which eventually placed him 22nd in the field.
One of only four freshmen to earn a spot in the javelin, Filipowicz established himself as one of the country's top up-and-coming standouts with a stellar performance throughout the spring. On April 17, he set a new personal-best with a 61.25-meter missile at the New Captains Classic. That marked the second-longest throw in school history, falling just short of Ed McSweeney's record-setting mark of 61.95 meters in 1977.
That throw was also the longest toss by any competitor in the South Region in two years.
Along with his historic outing in April, Filipowicz claimed the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championship with a 56.53-meter launch at the title meet in May. He became just the third Captain to win the league crown in the men's javelin, joining Horace Boykin (1999) and CNU Hall of Famer Richard Roethel (2011, 2012, 2014).
For his work throughout the season, the first-year phenom earned All-Conference and All-Region accolades.
Adding a fitting punctuation mark to his debut campaign, Filipowicz became the first student-athlete to represent Christopher Newport in the javelin at the NCAA Championships since Carl Braun placed 11th in 1988. Overall, he joined Braun and McSweeney as the only Captains to take part in the event at the national meet.
Additionally, Filipowicz became the first freshman to represent the men's team in any individual event at the NCAA Championships since CNU Hall of Famer Dominique Torres finished 18th in the triple jump at the 2013 outdoor competition.
Along with Filipowicz's work on Saturday, fellow Christopher Newport star Ellie Nuckols earned first-team All-American honors in the heptathlon after placing sixth in the combined event during the first two days of the meet.
