CNU Places 12 Captains on College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Track & Field and Cross Country Team

GREENWOOD, Ind. -- For their starring work both in and out of the classroom, 12 members of the Christopher Newport track & field and cross country programs earned Academic All-District honors, which were announced by the College Sports Communicators on Tuesday afternoon.

Headlining the group, Luke Tompkins and Daniel Young received the recognition for the third straight year. They joined former legends Adrianna DeSantis, Daniel Ferrante, Aimee Gibbs, and Zoe Stauffer as the only three-time honorees in the history of the CNU track & field and cross country programs.

Along with Tompkins and Young, Sarah Dake, Rylee Ehrett, Kevin Farnsworth, Elizabeth Lacombe, Kayla Lopez, and Seth Morris were all celebrated for the second consecutive year. Meanwhile, Charlie Anania, Kendal Brown, Andrew Janetsky, and Charlotte Waldemar were honored for the first time.

Overall, the 12 selections marked the most in school history, topping the 10 award-winners from last year.

In order to be eligible for the honor, student-athletes must have at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA while ranking in the top-50 in the region in at least one individual event. The All-District honor is the prerequisite for All-American accolades, which will be voted on by a national committee later this month.

Founded in 1952, the CSC (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-American program recognizes standouts from all sports across all divisions of the NCAA. There are over 20,000 total nominations every year with fewer than 10 percent of those student-athletes receiving the nation's highest academic honor.

Securing All-Conference and All-Region accolades for his performance in the javelin, Anania placed second in the event at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships with a 51.97-meter launch in May. Later, he set a new personal-best with a 53.23-meter rocket at the Widener Final Qualifier. That marked the sixth-longest throw in program history.

Making her mark in the high jump, Brown ranked among the top-25 performers in the South Region during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Over the winter, she established a new personal-best with a 1.52-meter clearance at the Vince Brown Invitational, which slotted her 15th in the region. Then, in the spring, she cleared 1.50 meters at the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic.

One of the program's top cross country stars, Dake picked up All-Conference and All-Region citations for her performance in the fall. She set a new 4k school record after finishing the Spider Alumni Open in 14:35.1. Then, she posted a time of 22:05.1 in the 6k at the C2C Championships, which was the fourth-fastest time by a Captain. Additionally, she earned All-Region track & field nods in the indoor 3000.

A three-time conference champion, Ehrett captured league titles in the weight throw, hammer throw, and indoor shot put. For her domination, she was named the Women's Field Athlete of the Meet at the indoor championships. Meanwhile, she picked up All-Region honors in the hammer throw after posting a 47.72-meter toss at the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic, which was the second-longest toss in school history.

Capping off the fall at the NCAA South Region Cross Country Championships, Farnsworth set a new 8k PR with a time of 26:43.7. Then, after switching to track & field, he earned All-Region nods and finished third in the DMR at the indoor league meet. Later, in the spring, he notched a personal-best in the 800 after clocking in at 1:56.09 at the Widener Final Qualifier. That ranked 27th in the South Region.

Stockpiling awards for his work, Janetsky won the conference championship in the outdoor 10,000 after securing a pair of All-League nods in the indoor 3000 and 5000. He also picked up a pair of All-Region nods during the spring. Meanwhile, on the cross country team, he finished the Don Cathcart Invitational in 24:53.3, which was the ninth-fastest 8k time in school history.

One of the league's top performers in the pole vault, Lacombe picked up All-Conference honors in the event after placing second at the indoor championships with a 2.99-meter clearance. That placed her 15th on the regional leaderboard during the winter. Then, in the spring, she added a 2.79-meter height at the New Captains Classic, which ranked 16th during the outdoor season.

Dominant during the cross country campaign, Lopez notched All-League accolades after finishing 12th at the conference championships with a time of 22:43.8 in November. That moved her to 17th on the program's all-time 6k performance list. She also threw down a time of 15:04.7 in the 4k at the Spider Alumni Open, which was the second-fastest mark in school lore.

Honored as the Men's Indoor and Outdoor Field Athlete of the Meet at the league championships, Morris won conference crowns in the weight throw and hammer throw as well as the indoor and outdoor shot put. He also garnered All-Region honors in all four disciplines. Meanwhile, he jumped to second on the school's all-time charts in both the hammer (55.83 meters) and indoor shot put (16.45 meters).

In cross country, Tompkins notched a new personal-best in the 8k with a time of 25:51.9 at the league championships, which placed him 37th in program history. Then, in track & field, he set a PR in the 3000 (9:05.17) and guided the DMR to a third-place finish while earning All-Region laurels at the conference meet during the indoor season.

Solidifying her spot as one of the top throwers in the conference, Waldemar secured All-League accolades in the weight throw, discus, and indoor shot put. Her personal-best mark of 35.06-meters in the discus placed her 20th in the NCAA South Region. Equally impressive throughout the year, she also notched new PRs in the hammer (38.77 meters) and weight throw (13.32 meters).

At the South Region Final Qualifier, Young broke the school record in the indoor shot put with a 16.48-meter missile. That also marked the longest throw by anyone in the region during the 2026 campaign. Eventually, he earned All-Conference and All-Region accolades in both the indoor and outdoor shot put during the year, while he also ranked 20th in the South in the hammer throw (44.48 meters).
