ALLIANCE, Ohio --
Wrapping up a terrific two-day stretch on Thursday at the Mount Union Final Qualifier, Sam Anania captured the decathlon while leading the Christopher Newport track & field teams on the final day of the competition at Kehres Stadium.

Anania walked away with a victory in the combined event after finishing with 5,607 points. That established a new personal-best and vaulted him to fourth on the program's all-time performance list. Along the way, he also registered a PR in the pole vault after eclipsing 4.57 meters, which marked the sixth-highest clearance in school history.

In addition to his historic work in the pole vault, Anania also set a new personal standard in the 110-hurdles after crossing in 16.63. Rounding out his day, he posted a 17.55-meter toss in the discus, a 43.71-meter heave in the javelin, and a 5:14.64 clocking in the 1500.

Kendrick Matheny also set a PR in the decathlon while placing fourth overall with a score of 5,049. Among his work, he notched personal-bests in the 110-hurdles (15.84), discus (24.71 meters), and pole vault (3.27 meters).

Along with the standouts in the combined events, Ellie Nuckols finished a busy day with an appearance in four different disciplines on Thursday. The junior All-American won the 400-hurdles in 1:04.21 and was the runner-up in both the long jump (5.35 meters) and 100-hurdles (14.54). She also came in fifth in the high jump with a 1.55-meter showcase.

In other events on the women's side, Ashley Eley was sixth in the triple jump (10.93 meters) and seventh in the high jump (1.55 meters), while freshman Kayla Asprey placed ninth in both the discus (39.31 meters) and shot put (11.03 meters).

Rounding out the top competitors for CNU, Leo Brennan placed ninth in the men's long jump with a 6.36-meter distance.

The Captains will now await word on potential bids to the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Championships, which will begin on May 21 at the Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex in La Crosse, Wisconsin. A final list of the meet participants will be published on the NCAA's official website by 8 p.m. on Friday.
