NEW ORLEANS -- Stockpiling awards for their work in the spring, 20 members of the Christopher Newport track & field teams earned All-Region accolades, which were announced on Wednesday afternoon by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Overall, the Captains earned 29 total All-Region awards with five standouts securing multiple plaudits. Leading the way,
Ashley Eley and
Ellie Nuckols picked up four honors apiece for their efforts during the outdoor season.
Showcasing their diverse skills, the two stars were both celebrated in the heptathlon and high jump. Meanwhile, Eley also received honors in the long jump and triple jump, while Nuckols was hailed for her performance in the 100- and 400-hurdles.
Nuckols, who ranked first in the South in the heptathlon after setting a new school record with a score of 4,832 at the New Captains Classic, will continue her junior campaign this week with an appearance at the NCAA Championships in both the heptathlon and 400-hurdles.
Along with Nuckols, freshman
Dylan Filipowicz will also compete at the national meet after boasting the region's top mark in the javelin with a 61.25-meter launch at the New Captains Classic.
Three men also received a pair of All-Region citations for their work in the spring. On the track,
Andrew Janetsky was ranked among the top performers in both the 5,000 and 10,000. Additionally, in field events,
Seth Morris shined in the hammer and shot put, while
Sam Anania received awards in the decathlon and pole vault.
In addition to Morris, five other men were recognized in throwing events.
Bradley Stine and
Henry Hunt both earned All-Region honors in the discus. Meanwhile,
Ben Varner excelled in the hammer,
Charlie Anania starred in the javelin, and
Daniel Young slotted third in the region in the shot put.
Rounding out the men's honorees,
Jahi Jemison and
Kendrick Matheny picked up plaudits in the decathlon,
Leo Brennan was hailed in the long jump,
TJ Brown secured recognition in the 3000-steeplechase, and
Clayton Rankin was a top standout in the 10,000.
For the women,
Sarah Bland also received an All-Region certificate in the steeplechase, while
Bailey Billger joined Eley and Nuckols among the South's finest performers in the heptathlon. In field events,
Kayla Asprey wrapped up her freshman campaign as an award-winner in the discus, and
Rylee Ehrett hauled in praise for her work in the hammer.
