ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Headlining Wednesday's action for the Christopher Newport track & field teams,
Seth Morris posted a victory in the hammer throw on the opening day of the Mount Union Final Qualifier at Kehres Stadium.
During the competition, Morris topped the field with a 55.83-meter launch. That bested the second-place finisher by over 18 feet. It also marked the second-longest throw in school history and vaulted him into the top-40 on this year's national leaderboard.
In other throwing events,
Dylan Filipowicz was the runner-up in the javelin with a 55.19-meter toss, while
Charlie Anania came in third in the event with a 49.87-meter showcase.
Wednesday also served as the opening day of the combined events. On the men's side,
Sam Anania wrapped up the first five disciplines in the decathlon with a score of 2,962, which currently ranks first in the field. Additionally,
Kendrick Matheny sits fourth with 2,810 points.
Among his work on Wednesday, Anania established PRs in the 100 (11.74), 400 (54.33), long jump (6.34 meters), and high jump (1.73 meters). He also unleashed an 8.62-meter heave in the shot put. Meanwhile, Matheny set new personal standards in the 100 (11.74) and long jump (5.77 meters). Later, he rounded out his day with a 53.79 clocking in the 400, a 1.61-meter clearance in the high jump, and a 9.41-meter throw in the shot put.
Christopher Newport will wrap up the competition with the final day of action on Thursday. The meet will resume with the men's high jump, men's shot put, and women's discus at noon.
