NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport track & field teams walked away with six victories, while three individuals made their mark on the program's all-time performance lists during the CNU Qualifier on Sunday afternoon at the Freeman Center.
Continuing the program's historic showing in the throwing events this season,
Latrell Fomby jumped to second on the school's all-time charts after launching a 17.81-meter effort in the men's weight throw. That also moved him to 35th on the national charts this year. Meanwhile, on the women's side,
Katie Stevens won the event with a 15.91-meter launch, while Rylett Ehrett established a new personal-best with a 14.30-meter toss, which placed her fourth on the program's all-time performance list.
Rounding out the team's historic efforts,
Lily Knowles set a new PR after eclipsing 3.13 meters in the pole vault. That stands as the ninth-highest clearance in school history.
Along with the history-makers, several other Captains snatched victories on Sunday. For the women,
Josie Brumfield won the 800 in 2:30.79, while
Sarah Bland took the mile in 5:20.39. The men were equally dominant in the distance events as
Taylor Dalton captured the 800 (1:59.72),
Luke Tompkins crossed first in the mile (4:25.20), and
Tom Foti paced the field in the 3000 (8:57.37).
In other track events on the men's side,
Marshall Mattison was fourth in the 60 (7.02),
Rob Anderson came in sixth in the 400 (53.61), and
Darrin Gallegos-Perches matched that finish in the finals of the 60-hurdles (8.91).
Langley Forte also led the squad in the 200 with a time of 24.11, while Mattison, Tompkins,
John Laser, and
David Keroack placed third in the 4x400-relay. Together, the foursome wrapped up the event in 3:32.93.
Meanwhile, in field disciplines,
Nick Williams eclipsed 1.70 meters in the high jump, while
Daniel Young uncorked a 15.26-meter heave in the shot put. Both of those marks ranked second at the meet. Additionally,
Leo Brennan was fourth in the long jump (6.28 meters), while
Wyatt Davis was fifth in the triple jump (11.62 meters).
For the women,
Sydney Trussell was the runner-up in the 200 (25.65),
Kendal Brown placed second in the high jump (1.42 meters), and Stevens added a second-place showcase in the shot put (12.30 meters). Rounding out the squad's top marks,
Ashley Eley landed a distance of 10.76 meters in the triple jump, while
Ellie Nuckols completed the 60-hurdles in 9.46.
"It is tough to keep energy and focus sharp coming off of Conferences, and the team did a good job of finding both in spite of the small size of the meet," said head coach
Tyler Wingard, whose student-athletes accumulated 24 team PRs during the meet. "That bodes well for our group heading to Shenandoah for final shots at Nationals' berths and for our transition into the outdoor season."
Christopher Newport will return to action on March 7 for the start of the South Region Final Qualifier in Winchester, Virginia.
