BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Following tremendous work throughout the 2025-26 campaign,
Leo Brennan and
Ellie Nuckols were selected to represent the Christopher Newport track & field teams at the NCAA Indoor Championships, which will begin on March 13 at the Birmingham Crossplex in Alabama.
Brennan received a bid in the men's long jump, while Nuckols was chosen in the pentathlon. With their selections, both standouts earned a spot at the track & field championships for the first time.
Kicking off a jam-packed day of action, Nuckols will open the pentathlon with the 60-hurdles at 11:20 a.m. EDT on March 13. Later, she will wrap up the combined event with appearances in the high jump, shot put, and long jump before capping off the competition in the 800 at approximately 5:20 p.m.
On Friday, Brennan will also make his debut in the long jump. The senior will contend for national supremacy beginning with the prelims at 12:30 p.m. EDT.
With the selections of Brennan and Nuckols, CNU will be represented at the indoor championships for the fifth straight year. Last winter, former legend
Katie Stevens hauled in All-American accolades in the weight throw after placing 16th at the competition.
Brennan enters the meet seeded 18th in the country after establishing a new personal-best in the long jump with a 7.19-meter distance at the South Region Final Qualifier on Saturday. That tacked on nearly four inches to his previous PR and marked the fourth-longest leap in program history. It was also the top showing by a Captain since 2017.
Along with his historic work over the weekend, Brennan claimed the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championship in the long jump for the second straight year. During the league competition, he landed a 7.10-meter effort, which set a new meet record. Coupled with his previous title in 2025, he became the first Captain to repeat in the indoor long jump since Nick Robinson dominated the Mason-Dixon Conference in 2003 and 2004.
In addition to his performance on the league level, Brennan became the first Captain to qualify for the indoor championships in the men's long jump since Robinson made an appearance in 2004. Overall, he is just the fourth CNU standout to earn a bid in the event, joining Robinson as well as three-time selection Damon Talley (1999-02) and former legend Bernard Wallace (1990).
Seeded 11th in the pentathlon, Nuckols solidified her spot at the indoor championships with sensational work during the South Region Final Qualifier on Saturday. At the meet, she won the combined event with a score of 3,501. That added nearly 200 points to her previous PR and launched her to second on the program's all-time performance list. Her total fell just short of Enuma Ezenwa's school record of 3,576 points, which she set in 2015.
During her historic appearance on Saturday, Nuckols established a pair of personal-bests in the high jump (1.52 meters) and shot put (10.05 meters). She also posted the competition's top mark in the other three disciplines after winning the 60-hurdles (9.08), long jump (5.33 meters), and 800 (2:23.25).
Flashing her versatility throughout the year, Nuckols won the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championship in the 400 after crossing the line in 58.01, which was the sixth-fastest clocking in school history. She also scored in the 60-hurdles, shot put, and long jump. In the end, her 22 total points equaled the second-most by any competitor at the league meet.
With her selection to the track & field championships, Nuckols also added her name to a list of the greatest multi-sport standouts in school history. After leading the field hockey team to the NCAA Final Four in the fall, she became just the 13th student-athlete at Christopher Newport to advance to the final site of the NCAA Championships in two different sports during the same academic year.
In that exclusive club, she joined 11 distance runners, who reached the title competition in both cross country and track & field, as well as CNU Hall of Famer Briana Sutton, who starred in both volleyball and track & field. Incidentally, when Sutton accomplished the feat in 2014-15, she also received a bid to the NCAA Championships in the pentathlon.
Overall, Nuckols is the sixth Captain to earn a spot at the title meet in the women's pentathlon. Along with Sutton, who was a three-time selection, Alyssa Roach, Enuma Ezenwa, and Jennifer Westerholm secured a pair of berths, while Dira Hansen punched her ticket in 2011.
