LA CROSSE, Wisc. -- The Christopher Newport track & field teams will send a pair of competitors to the NCAA Outdoor Championships as
Dylan Filipowicz and
Ellie Nuckols earned bids to the title meet, which will begin on Thursday at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
Filipowicz secured a spot in the men's javelin, while Nuckols punched her ticket in the heptathlon and 400-hurdles.
Nuckols will kick off the competition with the start of the heptathlon at 10:40 a.m. on May 21. After taking part in the first four disciplines on Thursday, she will wrap up the two-day gauntlet with the final three events on Friday. The second day opens with the long jump at 12:30 p.m., while the 800 will conclude the combined event at approximately 3:50 p.m.
In addition to the heptathlon, Nuckols will participate in the prelims of the 400-hurdles on Thursday at 5:10 p.m. The finals will take place on Saturday at 3:15 p.m.
Meanwhile, Filipowicz will make his debut on the national stage with the start of the javelin at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
For those fans unable to attend the competition, live results and a video stream of the action will be available at NCAA.com.
Bursting onto the scene with a dynamite debut campaign, Filipowicz quickly established himself as one of the nation's top performers in the javelin. On April 17, he set a new personal-best with a 61.25-meter missile at the New Captains Classic. That was the second-longest throw in school history and the finest toss since 1977. It fell just short of Ed McSweeney's record-setting launch of 61.95 meters, which he posted nearly half a century ago.
In addition to making school history, Filipowicz's throw also placed him 22nd on this year's national leaderboard and marked the top performance in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference since 2023.
Along with his work at the New Captains Classic, Filipowicz claimed the league championship in the javelin with a 56.53-meter heave at the conference meet. Earlier in the year, he also posted a victory at the Blue & Silver Challenge in March and notched the top mark by a Division III competitor at the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic in April.
With his selection, Filipowicz became the first Captain to earn a spot at the NCAA Championships in the javelin since Carl Braun placed 11th in 1988. Overall, he is just the third student-athlete to receive a bid in the event, joining Braun and McSweeney, who took part in the title meet in 1977.
Adding another layer to his historic appearance, Filipowicz became the first freshman to qualify for the NCAA Championships in any event since All-American triple jumper CJ Reeders picked up a bid to the 2020 indoor competition, which was eventually canceled in the midst of the CoVID-19 pandemic. The last Captain to participate in the title meet during his debut campaign was Cavanaugh McGaw, who advanced as a member of the Distance Medley Relay in 2017.
Needing just one appearance in the heptathlon to secure a spot at the NCAA Championships, Nuckols dominated the field during the New Captains Classic in April. At the meet, she compiled a score of 4,832, which established a new school record and marked the 11th-highest total in the country in 2026. Among her work during that competition, she set new personal standards in the 200 (25.55), 800 (2:19.70), high jump (1.60 meters), and javelin (23.32 meters).
Meanwhile, in the 400-hurdles, Nuckols threw down a career-best time of 1:01.63 at the Widener Final Qualifier. That placed her 21st on this year's national leaderboard. It was also the fourth-fastest clocking in program history and the top mark by a Captain since 1998.
Along with her showcase at Widener on Monday, Nuckols captured the league title in the 400-hurdles after finishing in 1:02.81 during the conference championships on May 2. That set a new meet record, besting her own standard of 1:03.50 from last spring. Fittingly, for that performance, she was recognized as the Women's Track Athlete of the Meet for the second straight year, becoming the first standout in league history to win the honor twice.
Aided by her historic efforts, Nuckols became the fifth Captain to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the women's heptathlon and the eighth to advance in the 400-hurdles.
Continuing a remarkable junior campaign, Nuckols previously hauled in All-American honors in the pentathlon after finishing 15th at the NCAA Indoor Championships during the winter. Meanwhile, she guided the field hockey team to the NCAA Final Four while serving as a starting midfielder in the fall.
Putting her yearlong excellence into perspective, Nuckols became only the fourth student-athlete in Christopher Newport history to advance to the final site of the NCAA Championships in all three seasons during a single academic year. In that exclusive club, she joined CNU Hall of Famers Grayson Reid (2016-17) and Jeff Dover (2016-17, 2017-18) as well as distance legend Cavanaugh McGaw (2017-18). Previously, the three men accomplished the trifecta after reaching the championships in cross country as well as indoor and outdoor track & field.
