LA CROSSE, Wisc. --
Solidifying her spot among the finest athletes in the nation, Christopher Newport standout Ellie Nuckols collected first-team All-American honors while establishing a new program record in the heptathlon on Friday during the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Capping off the two-day gauntlet with a remarkable run in the 800, Nuckols eventually finished sixth in the heptathlon after accumulating 4,887 points. That topped her own school record of 4,832, which she posted in April at the New Captains Classic.

In addition to setting a new program standard, Nuckols' total also broke the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference record. She beat the previous league mark of 4,836, which was set by UC Santa Cruz's Nia Kim earlier this year at the Bryan Clay Invitational in California.

With her performance, Nuckols became the first Captain in school history to earn All-American accolades in the women's heptathlon. It was also her second national award of the year after she secured a second-team All-American citation in the pentathlon at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.

After completing the first four events of the heptathlon on Thursday, Nuckols opened the second day of the competition with a 5.44-meter leap in the long jump. That was her top distance of the season and the fourth-longest effort of her career. Additionally, it was the best showing by a CNU heptathlete in the history of the NCAA Championships and the longest jump by any Captain at the outdoor meet since Marquita Mines hauled in All-American nods in the long jump with a 5.71-meter mark in 2005.

Capping off the field disciplines, Nuckols returned with a 23.09-meter toss in the javelin, which was the second-longest throw of her career.

Entering the final event of the heptathlon in 12th place, Nuckols put on a performance for the ages in the 800. Competing in the first heat, the third-year speedster shaved six seconds off her personal-best while clocking in at 2:13.66. That also launched her to third on the program's all-time performance list and marked the fastest time by any Captain since 2017.

In the end, Nuckols' time in the 800 was the second-fastest in the heptathlon on Friday, just a split second behind the top performer, who won the race in a photo finish. For her gritty run, the Chesterfield, Virginia native vaulted up six spots in the final standings and locked up first-team All-American honors.

In another twist of fate, Nuckols entered the 800 in a dead heat with UC Santa Cruz's Nia Kim in the overall standings. The league rivals both had 3,975 points through the first six disciplines. Then, in the head-to-head battle, Nuckols came out on top by 11 seconds, which earned her a spot on the first-team All-American squad and helped the CNU star break Kim's league record in the heptathlon.

Friday's outing capped off one of the most storied years by any student-athlete in Christopher Newport history. In addition to setting a new school standard in the heptathlon, Nuckols also ran the 800-meter leg on the program's record-setting DMR at the Camel City Festival in February. For her performance during the indoor and outdoor seasons, she eventually earned nine All-Region honors along with her two All-American certificates.

Prior to her award-winning work with the track & field program, Nuckols also starred in the fall as a member of the field hockey team. Starting all 20 games, she guided the Captains to an appearance in the Final Four. In the end, the squad posted a 19-1 record and finished the year ranked first in the NFHCA National Coaches Poll.

Putting her yearlong dominance into perspective, Nuckols became just the fourth student-athlete in Christopher Newport history to advance to the final site of the NCAA Championships in all three seasons during a single academic year. In that exclusive club, she joined former distance legends Grayson Reid, Jeff Dover, and Cavanaugh McGaw, who all completed the trifecta in cross country as well as indoor and outdoor track & field.

Christopher Newport will wrap up the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Saturday when Dylan Filipowicz takes part in the men's javelin beginning at noon.
