Since arriving at CNU prior to the 2006-07 season, Tyler Wingard has maintained Christopher Newport's lofty position as one of the top programs both in the region and around the country.

During his time with the Captains, Wingard has coached 64 All-Americans and three National Champions. Rachael Clark won the indoor shot put crown in 2007 before Richard Roethel won the indoor heptathlon in 2012 and the outdoor decathlon in 2014. Overall, CNU has sent over 100 Captains to the National Championships during his tenure.

Along with the individual successes, Wingard’s teams have won 66 conference cross country and track & field championships over the past 17 years. Additionally, 51 school records have been toppled under his watch.

For his work with the program, Wingard has been named the USTFCCCA South / Southeast Region Coach of the Year on 11 occasions.

Prior to arriving at CNU, Wingard served as the head coach at Valparaiso for six years. While with the Crusaders, his athletes won 13 Mid-Continent Conference individual championships and two relay titles, earned 81 all-conference honors and broke 44 school records. Seven of his athletes qualified for NCAA regional competition. In addition, he coached the men’s outdoor conference Athlete of the Year in his final year and worked with three conference Newcomers of the Year.
