FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Following a series of historic performances at the Blue & Silver Challenge on Saturday, Christopher Newport track & field stars
Ashley Eley and
Seth Morris were named the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Field Athletes of the Week on Monday.
The weekly award was the third of the year for Eley, who was previously celebrated on December 8 and January 19. It also was her sixth career citation. Meanwhile, Morris picked up the men's award for the second time this year and the fifth time during his decorated tenure at CNU.
Kicking off the outdoor season in style, Eley vaulted up the national leaderboard in a pair of events on Saturday. In the high jump, the third-year standout eclipsed 1.62 meters, which established a new personal-best and equaled the fifth-highest clearance in school history. It also was the top performance in the league this year by over two inches and launched her to 15th on the NCAA outdoor charts.
In addition to her work in the high jump, Eley also landed an 11.25-meter distance in the triple jump. That established a new outdoor PR and moved her to 14th on the national leaderboard.
Meanwhile, in the throwing events, Morris walked away with a pair of victories on Saturday. First, in the hammer throw, he claimed the title after setting a new personal-best with a 53.06-meter launch. That bumped him to fifth on Christopher Newport's all-time performance list and marked the 22nd-best throw in the nation this year. Additionally, it ranks as the longest toss in the league by over 10 feet.
Later in the day, Morris came back and claimed the shot put with a 15.39-meter missile. That also moved him to the top spot on the league charts and pushed him to 32nd on the NCAA leaderboard.
The Christopher Newport track & field teams will return to action on Thursday with the start of The Colonial Relays in Williamsburg.
