BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --
Punctuating a remarkable winter campaign, Christopher Newport standout Ellie Nuckols hauled in second-team All-American accolades in the pentathlon after starring in the combined event on Friday during the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Competing against the top athletes from around the nation, Nuckols finished 15th in the field after accumulating 3,424 points, which was the second-best mark of her career. It also was the second-best score ever posted by a Captain at the NCAA Championships.

With her national honor, Nuckols became just the third Captain in school history to earn All-American nods in the women's pentathlon. Previously, Enuma Ezenwa came in third during the 2015 indoor championships, while Jennifer Westerholm placed fifth at the 2016 competition.

During the five-event gauntlet, Nuckols opened the day with a time of 9.26 in the 60-hurdles. Later, she kicked off the field disciplines by establishing a new personal-best in the high jump after topping 1.55 meters. Then, she continued her showcase with a 9.61-meter toss in the shot put and a 5.12-meter leap in the long jump.

Hours after starting the pentathlon, the third-year star punctuated the competition with one final exclamation point. Burning up the track in the 800, she set a PR with a time of 2:22.17, which marked the fourth-fastest clocking at the meet.

Along with her All-American award, Nuckols stockpiled honors throughout the indoor campaign. Earlier this week, she picked up All-Region accolades for her efforts in five different disciplines. In addition to posting the South's top score in the pentathlon, the Chesterfield, Virginia native also ranked among the region's top performers in the 400, 60-hurdles, long jump, and distance medley relay.

Equally successful on the conference level, Nuckols captured the league championship in the 400 while also scoring in the shot put, long jump, and 60-hurdles. Her 22 total points during the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships equaled the second-most by any athlete at the title meet.

Nuckols' performance on Friday also added another chapter to a storybook year for the multi-sport standout. Less than four months ago, she served as a starting midfielder on the field hockey team in the NCAA Final Four. With her combined work during the fall and winter, she became just the 13th student-athlete in Christopher Newport history to advance to the final site of the NCAA Championships in two different sports during the same academic year.

In addition to Nuckols, Leo Brennan also advanced to the NCAA Championships in the men's long jump, but the senior star suffered an injury in warm-ups and pulled out of the competition.

The Captains will open up the outdoor season on March 28 when Christopher Newport hosts the Blue & Silver Challenge at TownBank Stadium.
