VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Competing for the third straight day, the Christopher Newport track & field teams capped off a jam-packed weekend with one final showcase at the Betty Rogers Invitational on Sunday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
Headlining the meet, CNU received several standout efforts from the team's throwers. Saving the squad's top performance for last,
Latrell Fomby wrapped up the competition with a school-record mark in the men's shot put. During the event, he uncorked a 15.95-meter missile, which topped the previous program standard of 15.85 meters set by
Seth Morris in December.
In addition to breaking the school record, Fomby's effort also launched him into the top-25 on the national charts this year.
Meanwhile, in the weight throw,
Katie Stevens won the women's discipline with a 15.63-meter toss, while
Rylee Ehrett came in second with a 14.17-meter distance. Although Stevens' mark fell just short of her school-record PR, Ehrett's throw established a new personal-best and moved her to fourth on the program's all-time performance list.
The men also had a series of top-flight efforts in the same event.
Colin Sliwa took the crown with a 16.83-meter launch, while Fomby placed second with a 16.74-meter showing. Meanwhile,
Seth Morris and
Ben Varner set new PRs in the weight throw and joined the program's all-time top-10 list. Morris posted a 15.31-meter heave, which moved him to ninth on the school charts. Additionally, Varner added a 15.24-meter toss, which bumped him to 10th in CNU history.
Rounding out the throwing events, Stevens finished second in the women's shot put (10.80 meters), while
Tyler Palmer was just behind Fomby in the men's competition with a 14.47-meter distance.
The Captains also stockpiled victories during the meet in a variety of other disciplines. Sweeping the 400,
Eli Wilson won the men's race in 50.96, while
Sydney Trussell took the women's title in 59.33.
Evan Young also won the men's mile with a 4:29.89 clocking, and
Mackenzie Tate topped 2.58 meters in the pole vault, which placed her first in the field.
Along with the victors, CNU received several other outstanding performances on the track. Four Captains placed in the top-five in the women's mile, including
Josie Brumfield, who came in second with a 5:33.70 mark. Later,
Sarah Dake was third in the 800 (2:29.84),
Ashley Eley matched that finish in the 60-hurdles (9.62), Trussell was fifth in the 200 (25.94), and
D'yan Robinson led the Captains with an 8.38 clocking in the 60.
In other field events on the women's side, Eley came in fifth in the long jump (5.17 meters), while
MK Harper-Louis added a pair of top-five marks. The freshman standout was fourth in the high jump (1.43 meters) and fifth in the triple jump (10.15 meters).
On the men's side,
Marshall Mattison led CNU in both the 60 (7.18) and 200 (22.75). Later, he joined forces with
Jacob Phelps,
Patrick Clark, and
John Laser on a second-place performance in the 4x400-relay. Together, the foursome completed the race in 3:31.71.
Along with his work on the relay, Clark was ninth in the 500 (1:16.31), while
Darrin Gallegos-Perches came in seventh in the 60-hurdles after posting a time of 9.19 in the prelims. Meanwhile, in distance events,
Kevin Farnsworth and
Luke Hawkins chipped in with a pair of third-place efforts. Farnsworth finished the 800 in 2:00.40, while Hawkins concluded the 5000 in 16:46.93.
Rounding out the team's top performers,
Leo Brennan paced the Captains in the triple jump (13.24 meters) and long jump (6.00 meters), and
Nick Williams eclipsed 1.75 meters in the high jump, which placed him seventh at the meet.
