CNU Track & Field Wins Seven Events at Captains Invitational

Final Results

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
The Christopher Newport track & field program claimed seven victories and orchestrated a pair of historic efforts during an impressive showcase at the Captains Invitational on Friday at the Freeman Center.

Leading the way, Sarah Dake swept a pair of distance events on the women's side. The second-year speedster claimed the mile in 5:25.59 before adding a triumph in the 3000 with a 10:58.32 mark. Tom Foti also snatched the men's 3000 after wrapping up the race in 9:10.40.

Meanwhile, in field disciplines, CNU dominated the men's throwing events. In his first appearance after setting a new school record in the shot put last month, Seth Morris added his second straight victory in the event with a 15.03-meter launch. Daniel Young also came in second with a 14.60-meter toss, which established a new indoor personal-best and moved him to ninth on the program's all-time performance list.

Also making history on Friday, Colin Sliwa claimed the men's weight throw with a 16.58-meter heave. That topped his previous PR by nearly two feet and marked the fifth-longest effort in school history.

Rounding out the individual victors, Elizabeth Lacombe captured the pole vault with a 2.77-meter clearance. Mackenzie Tate and Lily Knowles also eclipsed 2.62 meters, which equaled the second-highest mark at the meet.

"We do a deep and tough training cycle coming out of the holidays, so it was good to see so many PRs," said head coach Tyler Wingard, whose squad registered 29 total team PRs during Friday's action. "Now we move into our regular season routines and look forward to the performance levels continuing to rise."

Among other top performers for the Captains, Ashley Eley, Ellie Nuckols, and Sydney Chipperfield all contributed second-place efforts. Eley was the runner-up in the high jump (1.54 meters), Nuckols came in second in the 60-hurdles (9.46), and Chipperfield matched that showing in the 800 (2:37.71). Additionally, Rylee Ehrett came in third in the women's weight throw (13.15 meters) and fifth in the shot put (9.18 meters), while Alex Guzman was fifth in the triple jump (10.45 meters) and D'yan Robinson placed sixth in the long jump (4.66 meters).

Carter French also led the squad in the 60 after completing the prelims in 8.57.

On the men's side, Leo Brennan came through with three top-three finishes after placing second in the triple jump (12.69 meters) and third in both the long jump (6.27 meters) and high jump (1.72 meters). Nick Williams also eclipsed 1.72 meters in the high jump and finished second overall after winning the tiebreaker.

Equally successful on the track, Eli Wilson was second in the 400 (51.60), while Johnny Atienza was the runner-up in the mile (4:29.09). Meanwhile, among third-place performers, Matt Ryan completed the 200 in 23.94, Luca Hinton punctuated the 800 in 2:01.56, and Darrin Gallegos-Perches concluded the 60-hurdles in 9.31. Langley Forte notched a team-best mark in the 60 after finishing the prelims in 7.38 as well.

Along with his work in the 400, Wilson also teamed up with David Keroack, Charlie Anania, and Jacob Diehl on a victory in the 4x400-relay after the foursome finished in 3:37.64.

Christopher Newport will return to action next Friday when the Captains kick off the first day of the VMI Invitational in Lexington.
