Final Results
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Capping off a busy week, several Captains climbed up the program's all-time performance lists in a well-rounded effort by the Christopher Newport track & field teams during the Vince Brown Invitational on Sunday at the Freeman Center.
Leading the way,
Samantha Dickerson and
Monica Lannen posted a pair of historic efforts in distance events. Dickerson moved to eighth all-time in the mile after registering a time of 5:19.41. Meanwhile, Lannen jumped to ninth in program history in the 800 after crossing the line in 2:22.18. Later, Lannen teamed up with
Victoria Neston,
Kaitlynn Beaulieu, and
Kelly McKinney on a victorious effort in the 4x400-relay after finishing in 4:15.14.
On the men's side,
Carlos Bazan-Alfaro unloaded a 13.71-meter toss in the shot put, which stands ninth on the program's all-time performance list. In shorter distances,
Lewis Folli equaled the 10th-fastest time in CNU history in the 60-hurdles (8.36), while
Kurt Waller tied the ninth-best mark in the 200 (22.70). He also added a victory in the 400 with a 50.98 clocking, while
Brandon Berry (52.60) and
Hunter Sutliff (52.68) came in third and fourth, respectively.
Also notching victories on Sunday,
Trejon Edmonds and
Kathryn Wilson swept the 3000. Edmonds won the men's race in 8:57.76, while Wilson led the women in 10:58.74. Meanwhile, in the 5000,
Matthew Burke took the top spot in 15:44.14, and the men's 4x400-relay finished first in 3:23.51. The foursome of Berry,
Cavanaugh McGaw,
Cullen Monahan, and
Ryan Scott topped the second-place unit by nearly four seconds.
Meanwhile, on the women's side,
Hannah Bowden captured the crown in the 60-hurdles (9.23), and
Hannah Shoemaker won the shot put (13.32 meters), while
Samantha Tritt and
Rose Wyant equaled the top clearance in the pole vault after topping 2.89 meters. Additionally,
Lauryn Helstrom contributed a second-place showing in the high jump (1.51 meters), while
Emma Ballantyne was third in the 200 (27.17). Contributing a slew of fourth-place finishes, Beaulieu recorded a time of 2:24.05 in the 800, Neston clocked in at 1:03.54 in the 400, and
Natalie Prye threw down a time of 20:04.38 in the 5000.
The men's squad also featured a pair of top-five finishers in the mile as
Jarrell Hibler came in fourth (4:34.41) and
David Sandborn was fifth (4:36.26). Meanwhile,
William Ward added a third-place performance in the 800 (2:02.27), and
Derek Tay was fourth in the 60-meter finals after completing the race in 7.19.
Allan Pedin and
Chris Vincent also tied for the fourth-highest clearance in the pole vault after eclipsing 3.95 meters.
"The team looked good throughout the weekend, and it was great to see long-time grinders like Carlos and Lewis put their names on our All-Time Performers Lists," said head coach
Tyler Wingard. "Of course, the cliche that "we have more work to do" absolutely applies. This weekend, I think, added a lot more optimism to that work."
Christopher Newport will return to action on February 16 for the start of the two-day CAC Indoor Championships, which will be hosted at the Freeman Center.
