Scott and Monahan Climb National Leaderboards at JDL Last Chance Track & Field Meet on Sunday

Live Results

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Ryan Scott and Cullen Monahan jumped up the national leaderboards in a pair of track events, while Hannah Shoemaker established a new school record in the weight throw as the Christopher Newport track & field teams were well-represented on Sunday afternoon at the JDL Last Chance Invitational in Winston-Salem.

In the finals of the 60-hurdles, Scott threw down a time of 8.06, which places him second on the program's all-time performance list. It also moves him into the top-five nationally this year. Meanwhile, Monahan also vaulted into the top-five in the 800 after winning the race in 1:53.42, which ranks third all-time at Christopher Newport.

Equally impressive in the weight throw, Shoemaker continued torching the record books after landing a 14.79-meter throw on Sunday. That eclipsed the previous school standard of 14.68, which was set by teammate Sarah Johnson at the Capital Athletic Conference Championships last weekend. Shoemaker also added a 12.74-meter toss in the shot put, which placed her fifth in the field.

Meanwhile, on the men's side, Legend Hayes added a 16.85-meter heave in the weight throw, which ranks third on the program's all-time performance list.

In other events, Cavanaugh McGaw was the runner-up in the 800 (1:54.59), while Brendon Burrows was second in the shot put (14.87 meters). Lewis Folli also made a little history in the 60-hurdles after finishing the prelims in 8.27. That moved him to seventh in program history.

Along with his historic run in the 60-hurdles, Scott placed eighth in the 200 after finishing in 22.36. Later, Kurt Waller finished 15th in the race (22.92), while Brandon Berry was 16th (23.03). Capping off the meet, Waller, Berry, Scott, and Hunter Sutliff returned to place fourth in the 4x400-relay after completing the event in 3:25.90.

In other track events, Jason Putnam was third in the mile (4:22.25), while Billy Rabil was 13th (4:36.25). Waller also added a seventh-place showing in the 400 (50.30), and Daniel Read was 14th in the 3000 (9:09.77). Rabil, Waller, Monahan, and McGaw also teamed up in the Distance Medley Relay and finished third with a 10:06.84 mark.

The Captains will continue making a push for bids to the NCAA Championships on March 3 with the Tufts Final Qualifier.
