Ellie Nuckols and Katie Stevens Earn Top Individual Accolades as CNU Track & Field Wraps Up Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships

Final Results

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
Polishing off an impressive appearance at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, Ellie Nuckols and Katie Stevens swept the top individual accolades on the women's side, while the Christopher Newport track & field teams wrapped up a solid two-day stretch at the title meet on Saturday afternoon at TowneBank Stadium.

Nuckols finished the competition as the leading individual scorer after compiling 36.5 points while netting a pair of conference crowns and three All-League citations. For that performance, the second-year star was named the Women's Track Athlete of the Meet, becoming the first standout in program history to earn that award.

Meanwhile, Stevens pieced together her own award-winning weekend. The fourth-year phenom netted 34 points, three individual titles, and a pair of meet records. Fittingly, she was celebrated as the Women's Field Athlete of the Meet for the third straight year.

Aided by the efforts of Nuckols and Stevens, the women finished with 191 total points, which placed them just behind UC Santa Cruz, who collected 206. Meanwhile, the men finished third overall with 134 points.

Headlining Saturday's action, Nuckols swept the hurdles. In the 400-meter discipline, she clocked in at 1:03.50, which moved her into the top-50 nationally. It also established a new championship meet record, topping the old standard of 1:03.66, which was set by former CNU legend Enuma Ezenwa in 2015.

Earlier in the meet, Nuckols also claimed the league crown in the 100-hurdles after finishing in 15.23. In other events, she came in third in the 400 (58.81) while making an appearance on both relay teams. In the 4x400, she teamed with Sarah Bland, Millie Weinhold, and Courtney Mudd on a third-place showing in 4:17.42. Meanwhile, she joined forces with D'yan Robinson, Grace Damewood, and Sydney Trussell on a time of 49.13 in the 4x100. That placed the crew fourth in the field.

Rounding out her weekend, Nuckols also garnered All-Conference honors on Friday evening after finishing second in the long jump.

While Nuckols was lighting up the track, Stevens continued her domination in the throwing events. In the discus, she uncorked a 45.41-meter missile, which launched her into the top-20 nationally. It also established a new meet record, besting her own mark of 43.61 meters from last year's competition.

Coupled with her individual titles in the shot put and hammer on Friday, Stevens finished the meet with 18 career league championships. That stands as the highest total in Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference history and the third most in school lore. Previously, CNU Hall of Famer Casey Taylor won 21 individual crowns, while fellow legend Sheila Trice notched 20 during Christopher Newport's domination of the Mason-Dixon Conference.

Polishing off her appearance at the title meet, Stevens also came in fourth in the javelin with a 26.45-meter toss.

Three other Captains garnered All-League nods on the women's side. Sophomore Ashley Eley finished second in both the triple jump (11.14 meters) and high jump (1.54 meters), while freshman Charlotte Waldemar was the runner-up in the discus with a 32.69-meter effort. Additionally, on the track, Trussell came in second in the 400 after clocking in at 58.80.

Three men also garnered All-Conference recognition after finishing second in their events on Saturday. Darrin Gallegos-Perches set a new PR with a time of 15.59 in the 110-hurdles. Meanwhile, in field events, Latrell Fomby uncorked a 47.70-meter toss in the discus, and Leo Brennan landed a 13.48-meter distance in the triple jump.

Among other top performers for the men, Jahi Jemison eclipsed 1.79 meters in the high jump, which set a new personal-best and placed him third in the field. He also came in sixth in the 400-hurdles with a 58.44 clocking. Additionally, Charlie Anania tallied a fifth-place mark in the javelin with a 43.36-meter heave.

On the track, Marshall Mattison paced the squad in the 100 (10.83) and 200 (22.28), while Matt Ryan and Eli Wilson both notched top-five efforts in the 400 after finishing in 49.21 and 49.38, respectively. That was the first time either standout eclipsed the 50-second barrier.

Over longer distances, three Captains nabbed sixth-place finishes. Kevin Farnsworth wrapped up the 800 in 1:57.01, Evan Young completed the 1500 in 4:01.89, and Tom Foti concluded the 5000 in 15:47.15. Jason Sangiuliano also punctuated the 3000-steeplechase in 10:41.49, which ranked eighth in the conference.

On the women's side, Courtney Mudd shaved 10 seconds off her previous PR and moved to 10th on the program's all-time list in the 1500 after coming in fifth in 4:48.41. Meanwhile, Adalyn Perez was third in the 800 (2:20.49), Bland placed fifth in the steeplechase (12:04.47), and Lena Blagg led the Captains with a time of 20:01.16 in the 5000.

Among other top performers, Trussell rounded out her busy day with a third-place mark in the 200 (25.15). Robinson also came in third in the triple jump (10.97), while Rylee Ehrett helped Christopher Newport snatch the top-three spots in the discus after finishing third with a 32.59-meter launch.

"We had 40 Team PRs, 7 new All-Time Marks, and 3 Meet Records, so we definitely had a lot of good performances throughout the meet," said head coach Tyler Wingard. "It just wasn't enough this year to fight back Santa Cruz. They brought a strong team on both sides and competed really well throughout the weekend."

With the league meet in the books, the Captains will set their sights on qualifying for the NCAA Championships, which will be held at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio beginning on May 22. CNU will return to action on May 12 with an appearance at the Widener Final Qualifier in Chester, Pennsylvania.
