NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Ellie Nuckols vaulted up the national leaderboard in the heptathlon, while several other Captains added their own historic efforts as the Christopher Newport track & field teams wrapped up the New Captains Classic with another solid performance on Saturday afternoon at TowneBank Stadium.
During the heptathlon, Nuckols won two of the final three disciplines while finishing with 4,310 points. That marked the sixth-highest total in program history and pushed her into the top-25 on this year's NCAA charts.
Among her highlights, the second-year star landed a 5.45-meter leap in the long jump and completed the 800 in 2:27.26. She also finished fourth in the javelin after firing a 20.76-meter toss.
Along with Nuckols,
Ashley Eley finished second in the heptathlon with 3,653 points. During the final three disciplines, she placed second in the long jump (4.89 meters), javelin (21.37 meters), and 800 (3:04.25).
In other events on the women's side,
Adalyn Perez climbed to eighth on the school's all-time performance list in the 800 after finishing in 2:19.85. That sliced nearly three seconds off her previous PR, which she established last week at the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic. Meanwhile,
Sydney Trussell won the 400 in 57.49. That stands as the top clocking by a Captain since 2014.
On the men's side, two standouts added historic efforts in the shot put.
Daniel Young uncorked a 15.54-meter heave, while
Latrell Fomby unloaded a 15.19-meter missile. Those rank sixth and seventh in school history, respectively.
Two Captains also starred in the decathlon. Wrapping up the two-day event,
Max Taylor finished second in the field with 5,081 points, while
Jahi Jemison was third with 5,039. Among his top efforts, Taylor won the discus (37.68 meters) and was second in the javelin (37.15 meters). Meanwhile, Jemison was the runner-up in both the 110-hurdles (17.64) and pole vault (2.83 meters).
In other field events on the men's side,
Lemuel Avery finished fifth in the triple jump (12.51 meters) and sixth in the long jump (6.23), while
Logan Bishop came in fourth in the pole vault after topping 3.15 meters. Two stars also chipped in with third-place finishes as
Nick Williams eclipsed 1.66 meters in the high jump, while Fomby unloaded a 43.88-meter toss in the discus.
In the hurdles,
Darrin Gallegos-Perches placed third in the 110-meter version (16.21) and fifth in the 400-meter discipline (59.10). Additionally, in distance events,
Kevin Farnsworth came in third in the 800 (1:57.07),
Andrew Janetsky matched that finish in the 1500 (4:01.72), and
Evan Young was fifth in the 3000 (9:15.26).
Taylor Dalton also posted the squad's top clocking in the 3000-steeplechase after completing the course in 10:39.67.
Along with his work in the 800, Farnsworth also teamed up with
Luke Tompkins,
Johnny Atienza, and
Luca Hinton on a fourth-place showing in the 4x400-relay. Together, the foursome wrapped up the race in 3:31.61.
Leading the way in the sprints,
Leo Brennan was fourth in the 400 (50.21).
Matt Ryan also added a time of 22.88 in the 200, and
Marshall Mattison threw down an 11.24 mark in the 100.
On the women's side,
D'yan Robinson came in ninth in both the 100 (13.36) and 200 (28.36).
Kendal Brown also added a pair of top-10 marks after finishing fifth in the 400-hurdles (1:20.27) and ninth in the 100-meter discipline (19.12). Additionally,
Katherine Streeter was third in the 3000-steeplechase (12:44.59), and
Lena Blagg was seventh in the 1500 (5:11.69).
In field events,
Lily Knowles won the pole vault after topping 3.07 meters. Meanwhile,
Katie Stevens came in second in the discus (43.58 meters) and third in the shot put (11.53), while
Grace Damewood was the runner-up in the triple jump (10.65 meters) and the fourth-place finisher in the long jump (5.41).
MK Harper-Louis also eclipsed 1.48 meters in the high jump, which placed her sixth in the field.
"Those were really good steps forward for Ellie and Ashley in the Heptathlon and good debuts in the Decathlon for Max and Jahi," said head coach
Tyler Wingard. "Two hot days made energy management a little more challenging, but the quartet posted a couple dozen PRs overall. With the rest of the team, the focus was on setting up opportunities at Conference. For some, that meant chasing more PRs, and for others, it meant expanding their event range a bit. In the end, we are in a better position heading into the Championships in two weeks than we were heading into the weekend."
Christopher Newport will return to action on May 2 when the Captains open up the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships at TowneBank Stadium.
