WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Headlined by historic efforts from
Ashley Eley and
Sarah Dake, the Christopher Newport track & field teams punctuated an impressive two-day stretch at the Camel City Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the JDL Fast-Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Leading the way, Dake vaulted to fifth in program history in the 5000 after posting a time of 18:24.89. That also marked the fastest clocking by a Captain since former legend Lydia Cromwell completed the event in 18:16.20 at the Capital Athletic Conference Championships on February 21, 2016.
In field events, Eley placed her name alongside some of the finest standouts in school lore during the triple jump. Making her season debut in the event, she landed a distance of 11.40 meters. That moved her to sixth in program history and was the longest effort by a Captain since LaNeatra Johnson set the school standard with a 12.37-meter leap while claiming the NCAA Championship on March 15, 2003.
Along with Johnson, the rest of the program's triple jump leaderboard reads like a "Who's-Who" list of CNU legends. The only other Captains to top Eley's mark on Saturday were five-time All-American Lai Madden and CNU Hall of Famers Casey Taylor, Tamiko Patterson, and Sheila Trice.
In addition to Dake's historic run in the 5000,
Lena Blagg finished sixth in the race after crossing the line in 19:16.41. Meanwhile, in other events on the women's side,
Courtney Mudd concluded the mile in 5:21.86, and
Katie Stevens launched an 11.37-meter toss in the shot put.
For the men, Christopher Newport planted a pair of stars in the top-five of the shot put.
Seth Morris finished third in the field with a 15.09-meter heave, while
Tyler Palmer came in fourth with a 14.92-meter effort. Additionally, on the track,
Tom Foti completed the 5000 in 15:41.54,
Evan Young added an 8:43.36 clocking in the 3000, and
Taylor Dalton led the squad in the mile with a 4:24.21 mark.
CNU will return to action on Sunday when the Captains travel to the Virginia Beach Sports Center for the Betty Rogers Invitational.
