Captains Make More History as Christopher Newport Track & Field Puts Together Outstanding Effort at South Region Final Qualifier

Final Results

WINCHESTER, Va. --
Marching towards the NCAA Indoor Championships, the Christopher Newport track & field teams put together several historic efforts while polishing off the South Region Final Qualifier on Saturday afternoon at the Wilkins Center on the campus of Shenandoah University.

During the last regular season indoor meet of the year, three Captains pieced together historic efforts. In the men's 60, Daniel Fox crossed the line in 6.88, equaling the fifth-fastest clocking in program history and the top mark since 1995. Meanwhile, Wade Dunkelberger won the high jump with a 2.03-meter effort. That not only matched the third-highest clearance by a Captain, but it also vaulted him into the top-20 nationally.

In addition to the men, Mae Savoie added some history on the women's side. The senior speedster set a new PR while completing the mile in 5:17.73. That moved her to eighth on the school's all-time performance list.

Along with the history-makers, Sydney Trussell won the women's 60 (7.89) and 200 (25.57), while the men walked away with a pair of titles in field events. Gage Elliott placed first in the long jump (6.41 meters), and CJ Reeders added the top showing in the triple jump (14.31 meters).

In other events on the women's side, Adrianna DeSantis was the runner-up in the 400 (1:00.14), and Alyssa Roach came in second in the high jump (1.50 meters). Rounding out the men's competitors on Saturday, Jack Armel was second in the pole vault (4.42 meters), Cooper Albright came in fourth in the 800 (2:00.11), and Fox rounded out his historic day with a time of 22.36 in the 200.

The final list of meet participants for the NCAA Championships will be announced on Sunday by 7 p.m. The nation's top-20 declared student-athletes in each individual event will earn a spot at the title meet, which will begin on March 10 at the Birmingham Crossplex in Alabama. Along with Dunkelberger in the high jump, Roach is currently in the top-20 in both the long jump and pentathlon. Reeders is also 22nd in the triple jump.
