NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In their final tune-up before the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships next month, the Christopher Newport track & field teams will host the New Captains Classic & Combined Events beginning on Friday at TowneBank Stadium.
Friday's action begins at 4 p.m. with the men's hammer, women's javelin, and the start of the decathlon. Saturday kicks off at 11 a.m. with the men's pole vault and shot put as well as the women's long jump, discus, and 3000.
For those fans unable to attend the competition, live results and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
CNU will be one of six universities with competitors at the meet, including Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference rival Mary Washington. Overall, more than 60 Captains are currently scheduled to take part in at least one event over the weekend.
Entering the meet, four Captains rank in the top-50 nationally in at least one discipline.
Ellie Nuckols leads the crew in the 400-hurdles after throwing down a time of 1:02.44 last week at the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic. That stands as the 11th-fastest clocking in the country. It also earned her the league's Track Athlete of the Week Award on Monday.
Along with Nuckols,
Ashley Eley is 30th in the women's triple jump (11.38 meters) and 31st in the high jump (1.62 meters). Meanwhile,
Daniel Young is 28th in the men's shot put (16.08 meters), while
Seth Morris is 33rd in the shot (15.81 meters) and 47th in the hammer (53.06 meters).
In addition to the top-50 performers, several other standouts inched up the national leaderboard while notching season-best marks last week at Lynchburg. Especially dominant in the throwing events,
Bradley Stine and
Kayla Asprey starred in the discus. Stine climbed to 72nd nationally in the men's event (45.98 meters), while Asprey vaulted to 83rd in the women's discipline (39.21 meters).
Rylee Ehrett also jumped to 63rd in the women's hammer throw (47.72 meters), and
Dylan Filipowicz moved to 74th in the men's javelin (53.58 meters).
On the track, Christopher Newport also notched season-best clockings in all four relays last week. Anchoring both foursomes on the men's side,
Miles Allen helped CNU register times of 49.22 in the 4x100-relay and 3:24.50 in the 4x400-relay. For the women, Nuckols anchored the 4x100-crew, which finished in 49.22, while
Katelyn White ran the final leg on the 4x400-relay, which clocked in at 4:10.10.
After wrapping up their home schedule this weekend, the Captains will hit the road for the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships, which will be hosted by Mary Washington beginning on May 1 in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
