Ben Varner Makes Hammer Throw History as Captains Kick Off 60th Annual Colonial Relays

Live Results

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. --
On the first day of the 60th Annual Colonial Relays, Ben Varner vaulted up the program's all-time leaderboard in the hammer throw as the Christopher Newport track & field teams got off to a historic start during the prestigious competition on Thursday afternoon at William & Mary's Zable Stadium.

In the hammer, Varner led all Division III competitors - and placed fifth overall - with a distance of 51.88 meters. That established a new personal-best and moved him to seventh on CNU's all-time charts.

Remarkably, Varner eclipsed his previous PR with three of his throws on Thursday. In addition to his historic heave, he also notched distances of 51.27 meters and 47.87 meters. Both of those topped his old standard of 47.45 meters, which he posted at the New Captains Classic on April 19, 2024.

Along with Varner, Seth Morris came in sixth in the event on Thursday. He registered a distance of 51.02 meters.

The men's hammer throw served as the opening event of the prestigious Colonial Relays, which will run through Saturday at William & Mary's Zable Stadium. This year's competition features representatives from over 20 colleges, including standouts from all three levels of the NCAA.

In addition to Morris and Varner, 17 other Captains are scheduled to take part in at least one event during the meet. Action resumes on Friday morning with the women's hammer throw at 10:30 a.m. before track disciplines start at 11:55 a.m. Saturday kicks off at 10 a.m.

For those fans unable to attend the meet, live results will be available at TribeAthletics.com. A direct link can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

Following the Colonial Relays, Christopher Newport will continue the outdoor campaign on April 10 with the start of the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic in Lynchburg, Virginia.
