WINCHESTER, Va. -- On the opening day of the South Region Final Qualifier, three members of the Christopher Newport track & field teams took part in the first four disciplines of the heptathlon, and all three Captains established a slew of personal-bests while starring at Shenandoah's Wilkins Center on Friday evening.
Through the first four events,
Jahi Jemison sits third in the field with 2,504 points,
Sam Anania is fifth with 2,149, and
Kendrick Matheny ranks sixth with 1,966.
During the competition, all three Captains set new PRs in the 60. Jemison won the race in 7.04, while Anania came in fourth in 7.58. Just a split second later, Matheny crossed in 7.64, which placed him sixth in the field.
Along with his work in the 60, Jemison also set a new PR in the high jump after eclipsing 1.80 meters. Additionally, he landed a 5.73-meter leap in the long jump and posted a 9.91-meter heave in the shot put.
Meanwhile, Anania came back with two additional PRs in the long jump (5.80 meters) and shot put (9.20 meters). Later, he rounded out his evening by eclipsing 1.62 meters in the high jump.
Capping off the competitors, Matheny set a new personal standard in every discipline while making his collegiate debut in heptathlon. Following his work in the 60, he landed a 5.33-meter distance in the long jump, uncorked an 8.85-meter toss in the shot put, and topped 1.56 meters in the high jump.
