NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Challenging for league supremacy this week, the Christopher Newport track & field teams will host the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Championships beginning on Friday afternoon at the Freeman Center.
The men's long jump and women's weight throw will open the competition at 4 p.m. on Friday. Saturday's action will start at 10 a.m. with the men's triple jump and women's shot put.
Overall, men's and women's champions will be crowned in 16 different disciplines during the two-day competition.
Tickets for the competition will be $10 for adults and $5 for students. They can be purchased with cash only beginning one hour prior to the first event each day. Meanwhile, CNU students will be admitted free with a valid ID.
For those fans unable to attend the meet, live results and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
A perennial power at the league meet, the Christopher Newport women's team will look to capture its sixth consecutive conference title dating back to 2020. Overall, the Captains have won 10 of the 11 indoor crowns since they joined the league in 2014.
Meanwhile, on the men's side, CNU will look to unseat UC Santa Cruz, who captured last year's conference championship. Prior to the 2025 competition, the Captains had won four straight men's titles and seven of the previous eight dating back to 2016.
This year, Christopher Newport will battle representatives from five other universities. In addition to UC Santa Cruz, longtime rivals Salisbury and Mary Washington will be joined by newcomers Regent and Warren Wilson, who will be making their first appearance at the league meet.
On an individual level, CNU returns four defending conference champions from last year's title bout. On the men's side,
Leo Brennan swept the long jump and triple jump in 2025, while
Daniel Young captured the shot put. For the women,
Ellie Nuckols took the 60-hurdles, while
Ashley Eley snatched the triple jump.
Along with her efforts last winter, Eley also won the triple jump, high jump, and 60-hurdles during a well-rounded performance as a freshman in 2024.
So far this season, seven Captains boast the league's top mark in at least one event. Headlining that group,
Seth Morris owns the conference's finest effort in both the men's shot put (16.45 meters) and weight throw (16.64 meters). Meanwhile, for the women,
Kayla Asprey sits first in the shot put (12.55 meters), and
Rylee Ehrett has the best mark in the weight throw (14.25 meters).
In other field events,
Lily Knowles has the top clearance in the women's pole vault (3.06 meters), while Eley ranks first in the high jump (1.61 meters). On the track,
Sarah Bland stands atop the conference in the 800 (2:21.54), and Nuckols has the league's fastest 400 (59.61).
Following the championship meet, Christopher Newport will remain at home for the CNU Qualifier on March 1.
