South Region Final Qualifier Live Results // Tufts National Qualifier Live Results
WINCHESTER, Va. -- Daniel Young established a new school record in the men's shot put, while
Leo Brennan and
Ellie Nuckols jumped into the top-20 nationally in their respective events as the Christopher Newport track & field teams concluded a busy weekend with outstanding work at both the South Region Final Qualifier and the Tufts National Qualifier on Saturday afternoon.
Competing at Shenandoah's Wilkins Center, Young captured the shot put with a 16.48-meter missile, which established a new program standard and moved him to 29th on the national leaderboard. His throw eclipsed the previous record of 16.45 meters, which was set by current teammate
Seth Morris at the CNU Holiday Open earlier this year.
In the pentathlon, Nuckols climbed to ninth in the nation with a historic performance on Saturday afternoon. During the combined event, she posted a score of 3,501, which was the second-highest total in program history. Among her efforts, she won the 60-hurdles (9.08), long jump (5.33 meters), and 800 (2:23.25) while adding a 1.52-meter clearance in the high jump and a 10.05-meter toss in the shot put. Her work in the latter two events established new PRs for the third-year sensation.
Rounding out CNU's nationally-ranked performers, Brennan moved to 19th on the NCAA leaderboard in the men's long jump. The senior won the event with a 7.19-meter leap. That also established a new PR and marked the fourth-longest distance in school history.
In other events on the men's side,
Jahi Jemison finished third in the heptathlon after posting a score of 4,264, which just missed matching his personal-best. Meanwhile,
Sam Anania set a new PR in the combined event with a score of 4,138. That vaulted him to fourth on the program's all-time performance list.
Among their highlights during the second day of the heptathlon, Jemison won the 60-hurdles in 8.70, while Anania added the top showcase in the pole vault after eclipsing 4.40 meters.
Capping off CNU's top finishers at the South Region Final Qualifier,
Kayla Asprey was the runner-up in the women's shot put (11.82 meters), and
Ashley Eley came in second in the women's triple jump (11.12 meters).
In addition to the standouts competing at Shenandoah, three other Captains made their mark at the Tufts National Qualifier in Medford, Massachusetts. In the men's 3000,
Andrew Janetsky came in sixth with a time of 9:01.76. Additionally, in the women's mile,
Sarah Bland clocked in at 5:13.70, and
Courtney Mudd crossed the line in 5:21.38.
Christopher Newport will now await word on potential bids to the NCAA Indoor Championships, which begin on March 13 at the Birmingham Crossplex in Alabama. The top-20 declared student-athletes in every event will earn a spot at the title meet. A final list of the meet participants will be posted on the NCAA's official website by 7 p.m. on Sunday.
