NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In their final indoor home meet of the season, the Christopher Newport track & field teams pieced together a record-setting performance on Sunday while starring on the final day of the CNU Qualifier & Combined Events at the Freeman Center.
Leading the way,
Alyssa Roach left her mark in the long jump. A day after moving up the national charts in the pentathlon, she capped off her weekend with another historic showcase on Sunday. During the meet, she won the long jump with a 5.87-meter distance. That marked the second-best effort in school history, trailing only Christopher Newport Hall of Famer Lisa Dillard, who established the program record of 5.93 meters while winning the national title at the 1987 NCAA Championships at the University of Chicago.
In addition to placing her among the top standouts in school history, Roach's performance set a new conference standard, breaking her own record of 5.59 meters set last month at the VMI Invitational. Additionally, it vaulted her into the top-five in the nation this year.
Along with Roach,
Sydney Trussell also made league history on Sunday. The second-year speedster completed the 200 in 25.53. That beat the conference record of 25.59, which she previously held alongside Frostburg State's Kayla Truesdel.
Meanwhile, on the men's side, a pair of Captains also climbed Christopher Newport's historic charts in field events. In the weight throw,
Dante Ntiganzwa set a new PR with a 16.06-meter launch, which stands fifth on the school's all-time performance list.
Wade Dunkelberger also vaulted to fifth in the high jump after clearing 2.01 meters. That ranks in the top-20 nationally as well.
"I was really pleased with the performances today," said head coach
Tyler Wingard, whose teams registered 35 PRs during the weekend. "Coming off last week's big Conference Titles and carrying that momentum into this weekend's relatively small, quiet meet just shows that we have a lot more in us heading into the outdoor season. Alyssa, obviously, had a great weekend with a National Top-10 performance in the Pentathlon yesterday and then nearly eclipsing one of the toughest records on our Indoor board in the Long Jump - moving to #3 Nationally - was fantastic to see. Sydney and Wade made big steps forward and head into next week's Final Qualifier ranked in the Top-30 Nationally. Adrianna moved back into the Top-50 in the 400m, and with CJ, Jack, and Danny all in range - it is great to have such a large group on the cusp of Nationals."
Joining the history-makers, several other standouts walked away with victories on Sunday. For the men,
Cooper Albright won the 800 (1:56.79),
Jason Sangiuliano took the mile (4:45.93), and
Logan Bishop posted the top mark in the pole vault (3.43 meters). On the women's side,
Libby Miles snatched the mile (5:39.80),
Claire Garster captured the 3000 (11:10.25), and
Katie Stevens continued her incredible season in the weight throw (15.17 meters).
Among other top marks for the women,
Mae Savoie was the runner-up in the 800 (2:22.45),
Adrianna DeSantis came in third in the 400 (59.03), and
Eleanor Eungard wrapped up the 60 in 8.67. The men also starred in a variety of disciplines as
Gage Elliott finished second in the 200 (23.40),
Luke Hawkins was the runner-up in the 3000 (9:01.24),
Brandon Peterson matched that finish in the long jump (6.33 meters), and
Tyler Palmer just missed the top spot in the weight throw (13.91 meters).
In addition to his work in the long jump, Peterson also finished fifth in the triple jump after landing a distance of 12.95 meters. Meanwhile, on the track,
Gustavo Leitao led the way in the 60-hurdles (8.96),
Daniel Fox starred in the 60 (6.98), and
John Laser wrapped up the 400 in 52.81.
Christopher Newport will continue the indoor season on March 4 when the Captains take part in South Region Final Qualifier at Shenandoah.
