NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Starring in field events throughout the meet,
Latrell Fomby and
Jack Armel headlined the efforts of the Christopher Newport track & field teams during the Vince Brown Invitational on Sunday afternoon at the Freeman Center.
Kicking off the action in the weight throw, Fomby unleashed a 15.22-meter heave. That not only established a new personal-best for the second-year standout, but it also placed him sixth on Christopher Newport's all-time performance list.
Meanwhile, Armel made history in the pole vault. The senior won the event with a 4.47-meter clearance. That added over two inches to his indoor PR and marked the sixth-best showing in program history. It also was the finest effort by a Captain since 2017.
"We had a good day today, and the team energy was pretty good throughout," said head coach
Tyler Wingard. "With so many people in different places with respect to their physical and mental preparations, it is hard to evaluate the day with a broad brush, but that is typical for late January. We definitely have some places we need to improve, and with just one more weekend of planned competition prior to the Indoor Championships, I think the motivation will be there to make it happen.
Along with Armel, several other men walked away with individual victories on Sunday.
