Final Results
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport track & field teams compiled eight victories and several historic efforts while wrapping up the final day of the New Captains Classic on Saturday afternoon at TowneBank Stadium.
Headlining the all-day action,
Mazie Clark and
Logan Funk both registered victories with historic performances. In the women's shot put, Clark landed a distance of 12.00 meters, becoming just the ninth Captain to reach that distance. It also topped her previous PR by four inches and marked the top effort in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference this season.
Meanwhile, on the track, Funk starred in the women's 800. The senior standout established a new personal-best while finishing first in 2:21.26, which marked the 10th-fastest time in school history. It also edged out a pair of teammates as
Mae Savoie came in second in the event (2:23.17), while
Kenzie Hurley was third (2:30.94).
In other victorious efforts on the women's side,
Eliza Dana captured the 3000-steeplechase in 12:28.72, while
Lex McGrail placed second in 12:41.32. Funk, Savoie,
Adrianna DeSantis, and
Casey Yenyo also teamed up on a first-place showing in the 4x400-relay after capping off the meet with a time of 4:16.03.
On the men's side,
Daniel Ferrante,
Allan Pedin, and
Jack Armel posted individual victories. Ferrante won the 800 in 1:54.63 and was followed closely by
Clark Edwards (1:55.31),
John Vogel (1:55.34), and
Nathanael Ferrante (1:57.03). In field events, Pedin took the pole vault after eclipsing 4.25 meters.
Meanwhile, Armel totaled 5,497 points in the decathlon, which just missed his PR but out-distanced the runner-up by over 600. On Saturday, he flashed his skill set while winning the pole vault (4.45 meters), javelin (38.34 meters), and 1500 (4:57.55). He also added marks of 17.35 in the 110-hurdles and 30.55 meters in the discus.
Along with the individual victors,
Gage Elliott,
Daniel Fox,
CJ Reeders, and
Perry Spring captured the 4x100-relay in 43.82.
In addition to their work on the relay, Fox came in fifth in the 200 (22.73), while Reeders was the runner-up in the triple jump (13.58 meters) and eighth in the long jump (6.27 meters). In other field events,
Amir Siders was third in the shot put (13.67 meters),
Joe Kilama placed third in the discus (41.64 meters), and
Ethan Anderson matched that finish in the high jump after eclipsing 1.78 meters.
In field events on the women's side, Clark came in third in the discus (31.72 meters), while
Peyton Blanding was fourth in the pole vault (3.35 meters).
On the track,
Logan Warden was the runner-up in the 1500 after finishing in 4:58.80. Meanwhile, in shorter distances, DeSantis was third in the 400 (1:01.70), Yenyo was third in the 400-hurdles (1:16.86), and
Lindsey Stirling placed fourth in the 100 (13.11).
The men also had several other top-flight efforts on the track.
Cooper Albright was third in the 400 (50.65),
Jason Sangiuliano was seventh in the 1500 (4:17.43), and
Gustavo Leitao was fourth in the 110-hurdles (17.26) and eighth in the 400-hurdles (59.00).
"The throwers and mid-distance crew had another great day while earning 25 of the team's PRs," said head coach
Tyler Wingard, whose squad registered 32 total PRs during a terrific showcase on Saturday. "The guys' 800m got the attention of the Mary Washington and Salisbury teams as they watched the Ferrantes, Clark, and John V all finish between 1:54 and 1:57. Mazie hit another milestone in the shot put with her 12m effort, and the men added significant distances to their previous best throws. The Sprints-Hurdles-Jumps group had some strong performances, too, and with their training shifting gears now and some warmer weather ahead, they are in a good position to take care of business at Conference next month."
Christopher Newport will return to action on April 16 when the Captains travel to Lynchburg for the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic.
