Jack Armel Claims Heptathlon Crown on Final Day of Captains Invitational & Combined Events

Final Results

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
Jack Armel pieced together a big second-day effort to capture the heptathlon title, while six other Captains also registered victories as the Christopher Newport track & field teams wrapped up an outstanding weekend at the Captains Invitational & Combined Events on Saturday at the Freeman Center.

"The good start yesterday definitely carried over today," said head coach Tyler Wingard, who saw the Captains record 32 PRs during the meet. "We probably did our best job so far of executing our cues and race plans. That led to the long list of PRs and let us see a lot of the pieces that will come together over the next few weeks as we continue setting up for the Conference Championships next month."

Making his collegiate debut in the heptathlon, Armel starred on the second day of the competition while posting a total score of 3,750. That effort placed him eighth on Christopher Newport's all-time performance list and marked the best showing this year by an athlete in the South / Southeast Region. It also placed him 26th on the national charts.

On Saturday, Armel led the way in the pole vault after clearing 4.00 meters, while he also finished second in the 1000 (3:10.50). Coupled with his victory in the shot put (8.08 meters) on Friday and a clocking of 9.58 in the 60-hurdles on Saturday, Armel walked away with the title.

Placing just behind his teammate, fellow freshman Riley Park finished second overall with 3,601 points, which placed him ninth in school history and 29th in the NCAA. Meanwhile, Hayden Olsen capped off a solid weekend for the multi standouts after coming in fourth with 2,909 points.

In addition to their work in the heptathlon, the Captains also dominated in the distance events on Saturday. On the men's side, Jason Putnam won the 3000 (8:51.34), while Eric Speeney ran away with the mile championship (4:34.87). The women also swept those same events as Kaitlyn Ardrey edged out Kellie Hyde in the 3000 after crossing in 10:58.46, while Monica Lannen outpaced Ardrey in the mile with a 5:20.59 clocking.

Also claiming victories on Saturday, Mazie Clark captured the women's shot put with an 11.08-meter toss, and Peyton Blanding took the pole vault after she cleared 3.20 meters.

Among other top finishers on the women's side, Shannon Woods was the runner-up in the 800 with a time of 2:31.66, while Lauryn Helstrom finished second in the high jump after topping 1.48 meters. Adrianna DeSantis also stayed busy in the sprints, coming in eighth in the 400 (1:04.06) and 10th in the 200 (27.99). Lindsey Stirling also led the squad with a fifth-place showing in the 60 with an 8.39 mark.

For the men, Cooper Albright clocked in at 1:24.25 in the 600, which placed him third in the field and just a fraction of a second ahead of Ian Dors (1:24.85). Additionally, Amir Siders was sixth in the shot put (12.58 meters), and Philip Burrell matched that finish in the finals of the 60-hurdles (9.47). Perry Spring also stayed busy as the freshman came in seventh in the 400 (53.44) and teamed up with Albright, Dors, and Stephen Lengel on a third-place finish in the 4x400-relay (3:32.47).

Christopher Newport will return to action on Friday with the start of the Camel City Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
