CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Hannah Shoemaker broke her own school record in the hammer throw, while the men's 4x400-relay jumped up the national charts with a strong showing on Thursday evening during the MIT Final Qualifier at Steinbrenner Stadium and Morrison Track.
Headlining the meet, Shoemaker unleashed a 46.43-meter throw in the hammer. That eclipsed her own program record of 45.75 meters, which she established last year. Meanwhile,
Carlos Bazan-Alfaro and
Sarah Johnson also added historic efforts in throwing events. Johnson posted the school's second-best mark in the women's discus with a 42.74-meter toss, while Bazan-Alfaro jumped to fifth on CNU's all-time performance list in the men's shot put with a 14.94-meter effort.
Rounding out the throwers, Shoemaker also came in fourth in the women's shot put (13.42 meters), while
Legend Hayes won the men's discus (53.13 meters) and placed eighth in the hammer (51.61 meters).
On the track, the men's 4x400-relay moved into the top-16 nationally in the event. The foursome of
Kurt Waller,
Cavanaugh McGaw,
Cullen Monahan, and
Ryan Scott finished second overall with a 3:14.76 clocking. That is currently tied for the 12th-fastest mark in the nation.
Along with his work on the relay, Scott finished second in the 200 (22.15) and third in the prelims of the 110-hurdles (15.06). Waller also came in fourth in the 200 (22.43), while McGaw was fifth in the 800 (1:53.22). Also adding top-five efforts in running events,
Hunter Sutliff was second in the 400-hurdles (56.21), and
Daniel Cretney was third in the 3000-steeplechase (9:25.41). Waller, Scott,
Derek Tay, and
Nick Johnson teamed up for a fourth-place finish in the 4x100-relay as well after clocking in at 42.13.
Thursday's meet was the team's final appearance before the NCAA Championships, which will begin on May 24 at Wisconsin-La Crosse. The country's top-16 qualified relay units, top-20 men, and top-22 women in each discipline will earn a bid to the national meet. The final list of participants will be posted on the NCAA website on May 19.
