SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Headlined by several historic efforts, the Christopher Newport track & field teams capped off an excellent performance during the Swarthmore Final Qualifier on Monday evening at the Walter T. Skallerup Jr. Track.
Leading the way, two Captains posted top-10 all-time efforts in the men's 5000.
Grayson Reid registered the program's second-best clocking after finishing eighth overall in 14:39.97. Shortly thereafter,
Joseph Lightbody crossed in 14:53.01, which placed him 20th in the field and fourth on CNU's all-time performance list.
Equally strong in other distance events,
Jason Putnam jumped to eighth in school history in the 1500 after finishing in 3:54.89, while
Trejon Edmonds moved to seventh in the 3000-steeplechase with a 9:34.98 clocking.
Daniel Cretney, who already boasts Christopher Newport's second-best mark in the steeplechase, just missed matching his PR after placing 19th overall with a time of 9:23.09.
Also making their mark on Monday,
Hunter Sutliff starred in the 400-hurdles, while
Carlos Bazan-Alfaro led the way in the shot put. Sutliff completed the hurdles in 54.74, which stands as the fourth-best time in CNU history and the finest effort since 1997. Meanwhile, Bazan-Alfaro unleashed a 14.51-meter heave in the shot, which places him seventh on the program's all-time performance list.
Along with the history-makers,
Legend Hayes won the discus with a 52.00-meter throw, while
Cavanaugh McGaw placed 10th in the 800 (1:52.83). McGaw also teamed up with
Kurt Waller,
Cullen Monahan, and
Ryan Scott on a second-place finish in the 4x400-relay after completing the race in 3:17.86.
In other events on the men's side,
Derek Tay finished 11th in the 100 (11.21), Waller was 13th in the 400 (49.62), and
Brandon Berry placed 18th in the 200 (22.74). Tay, Berry, Scott, and
Nick Johnson also added a fourth-place finish in the 4x100-relay after posting a 41.86 clocking.
Leading the way for the women,
Jessica Brownell and
Hannah Shoemaker both registered second-place efforts. Brownell was the runner-up in the pole vault after topping 3.05 meters, while Shoemaker finished second in the shot put with a 13.09-meter toss.
Sarah Johnson also excelled in the discus after coming in third with a 40.31-meter effort.
Rounding out the women's competitors,
Samantha Dickerson and
Jessica Lee both ran the 5000. Dickerson paced the duo with a time of 18:42.03, while Lee completed the course in 18:53.61.
The Captains will return to action on Thursday when the squad takes part in the MIT Final Qualifier.
