NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Behind a pair of championship meet records and another school mark in the 3000, the Christopher Newport men's track & field team claimed its third consecutive Capital Athletic Conference Indoor Championship with a strong performance on Saturday at the Freeman Center.
Coming away with five individual titles, the Captains finished first in the team standings after accumulating 198 points. Wesley finished second with 102, while Mary Washington (93) and Salisbury (65) were up next. Rounding out the top-five, Penn State Harrisburg and York (Pa.) tied for fifth after notching 58 points apiece.
"We needed to have another strong showing after our good start last night - and the team delivered," said head coach
Tyler Wingard. "A couple of meet records, another school record, and some good moves on the Nationals Lists among the many Personal Records and Season Bests. The team really competed well on both the men's and women's sides. Our veterans did their jobs, and the freshmen and sophomores showed we are going to be in good hands with them for the next few years."
Headlining Saturday's action,
Jeff Dover established a new school and championship meet record in the 3000. The senior out-paced the field with a time of 8:20.58. That cut nearly five seconds off the previous school standard of 8:25.50 set by
Grayson Reid earlier this year. It also shaved nearly 13 seconds off Reid's championship meet mark of 8:33.12, which he set last season.
Equally successful,
Cullen Monahan added a victory in the 800 after crossing in 1:55.05. That topped the previous championship meet mark of 1:55.06, which was established by Salisbury's Thomas Burke during the 2014 title competition. Meanwhile,
Billy Rabil rounded out the distance champions on Saturday after winning the mile in 4:20.55.
Along with the distance domination,
Allan Pedin and
Ryan Scott also added individual titles. Pedin won the pole vault after clearing 4.40 meters, which places him ninth on the program's all-time performance list. Scott also repeated as the 60-hurdle champion after finishing first in 8.17. That clocking moves him into the top-10 nationally this year.
Adding a pair of historic efforts in the shorter distances,
Kurt Waller put together a meet to remember. The second-year speedster was the runner-up in both the 200 and 400 while vaulting to sixth on the program's all-time performance list in both disciplines. He notched a time of 49.92 in the 400, which stands as the fastest clocking by a Captain in over a decade. Later, he completed the 200 in 22.45.
Stockpiling points in the shot put, three Captains finished in the top-eight.
Brendon Burrows led the way with a second-place showing after unleashing a 14.41-meter toss. Meanwhile,
Legend Hayes and
Carlos Bazan-Alfaro came through with a pair of PRs. Hayes came in fifth with a 14.01-meter effort, while Bazan-Alfaro was up next with a 13.80-meter heave. With those marks. Hayes moves to eighth on the program's all-time performance list, while Bazan-Alfaro jumps to 10th.
In addition to the victors, the Captains dominated the distance events. The squad placed four runners in the top-eight in the 800, mile, and 3000. Trailing Monahan in the 800,
Cavanaugh McGaw came in second (1:56.57),
William Ward was fourth (2:01.63), and Rabil was seventh (2:01.79). McGaw was also the runner-up in the mile (4:20.75), while
Jason Putnam was third (4:21.47) and
Michael Carrico was eighth (4:27.45).
Rounding out the distance scorers, Reid was second in the 3000 (8:33.84),
Sam Murch was fifth (8:44.82), and
Joseph Lightbody was sixth (8:49.57).
Among other scoring performances,
Jeremiah Bethea was second in the pole vault after topping 4.15 meters, while
Lewis Folli was the runner-up in the 60-hurdles after finishing in 8.36. In the sprints, Scott was third in the 60 (7.10) and fifth in the 200 (22.79), while
Brandon Berry was seventh in both the 200 (22.94) and 400 (51.87).
Derek Tay also came in fifth in the 60 after crossing in 7.12, while the 4x400-relay of
Hunter Sutliff,
Cole Giles,
Carter Giles, and
Steven Martin placed third in 3:29.12.
