Final Results
LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Lighting up the track in the distance events,
Jeff Dover,
Cullen Monahan, and
Cavanaugh McGaw starred for the Christopher Newport track & field teams on the final day of the Liberty Kickoff on Saturday at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.
In the 3000, Dover posted the second-fastest time in program history after clocking in at 8:28.51, which placed him second overall on Saturday and first among Division III competitors. Meanwhile,
Sam Murch finished ninth in the field with a time of 8:40.03, while
Joseph Lightbody (8:46.04) and
Michael Carrico (8:48.13) came in 12th and 13th, respectively.
Equally impressive in the 800, Monahan matched the second-fastest time in CNU history after crossing the line in 1:53.85. That also stands as the top time by a Captain since 2011. McGaw made some history of his own in the event after finishing a split second behind his teammate in 1:53.86. That moved him to fourth on the program's all-time performance list.
Among other top finishers on the men's side,
Legend Hayes placed 11th in the weight throw with a 15.26-meter heave, while
Brendon Burrows came in 20th in the shot put after firing a 14.16-meter toss. Additionally,
Ryan Scott was 12th in the 60-hurdles with an 8.41 clocking and posted the top mark among Division III runners in the 200 after finishing the race in 22.32.
On the women's side,
Hannah Shoemaker came in 14th overall in the shot put with a 12.41-meter throw, while three Captains registered top-20 efforts in the 3000.
Samantha Dickerson led the way after placing 15th in 10:46.24, while
Kathryn Wilson followed in 17th (10:56.36) and
Jessica Lee rounded out the group in 19th (11:00.76).
Monica Lannen also placed 21st in the mile after completing the event in 5:20.57.
In other races,
Kaitlynn Beaulieu notched the squad's top time in the 800 (2:28.98), and
Emma Ballantyne came in 31st in the 400 (1:01.13). Keeping busy on Saturday,
Hannah Bowden was 35th in the long jump (4.71 meters), 39th in the 60-hurdles (9.73), and 59th in the 200 (27.46), while
Paige Travers led the team in the long jump (4.76 meters) and triple jump (9.94 meters).
The Captains will return to action on February 2 for the start of the two-day Camel City Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The squad will also host the Vince Brown Invitational at the Freeman Center on February 4.
