Final Results
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport track & field teams posted nine victories and several historic efforts as CNU wrapped up a successful afternoon on the final day of the Captains Invitational and Combined Events on Saturday at the Freeman Center.
During the day, the distance runners recorded seven of the squad's victories, including a pair of performances that rank among the top-10 all-time in program history.
Cavanaugh McGaw led the way with a win in the 800 after finishing in 1:54.89, which stands fifth on the program's all-time performance list. Meanwhile,
Grayson Reid notched a victory in the mile and moved to eighth in CNU history in the event after crossing the line in 4:17.53.
Along with the history-makers,
Cullen Monahan captured the 1,000 (2:34.19), and
Daniel Read took the top spot in the 3,000 (8:51.15). Later, Monahan, McGaw,
Billy Rabil, and
Jeff Dover teamed up for a first-place showing in the 4x400. Together, the foursome finished in 3:26.95.
Additionally, on the women's side,
Jessica Lee stormed to a victory in the 3,000 with a time of 10:43.31, and
Kelly McKinney captured the crown in the 600 with a 1:51.32 clocking.
Monica Lannen was also the runner-up in the 800 (2:29.09) and mile (5:30.88).
In non-distance events,
Hannah Bowden won the 60-hurdles in 9.48, and
Chris Vincent captured the men's pole vault after clearing 3.93 meters.
Also moving up the all-time performance lists,
Sarah Johnson unleashed a 12.09-meter throw in the shot put, which bumped her to fifth in program history.
Hannah Shoemaker, who already ranks third all-time in the event, added a third-place finish in the shot on Saturday as well with a 12.80-meter toss.
Among other top performers on the women's side,
Emma Ballantyne notched three top-10 efforts after coming in second in the 400 (1:00.62), fifth in the long jump (4.96 meters), and seventh in the 200 (27.18). Bowden and
Lauryn Helstrom also tied for the sixth-highest clearance in the high jump after topping 1.46 meters, while
Nina Lucas added the squad's top time in the 60 after placing seventh overall in 8.30.
Rounding out the men's top finishers,
Ryan Scott came in fourth in the 60-meter semifinals (7.13), and
Lewis Folli matched that finish in the 60-hurdles (8.60).
Marquise Murphy also notched a fourth-place showing in the long jump (6.20 meters), and
Brandon Berry was fifth in the 400 (53.56). Starring in the shot put as well,
Brendon Burrows came in third overall (14.22 meters) and
Legend Hayes was fifth (13.29).
"We have a lot more in the tank," said head coach
Tyler Wingard, whose teams recorded 29 PRs during the two-day meet. "Over the next two weeks, we should see a lot more development in all event areas as our training rhythms take hold and better carry over to competition."
Christopher Newport will return to action on January 26 for the start of the two-day Liberty Kickoff in Lynchburg.
