NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After earning All-American plaudits for their efforts during the cross country campaign,
Grayson Reid and
Jeff Dover made a smooth transition to the track & field season as the two standouts put together record-breaking performances for Christopher Newport during the Holiday Open on Saturday at the Freeman Center.
Â
Headlining the meet, Reid shattered a pair of school records and also established a new Capital Athletic Conference standard. Kicking off his day, he broke the school and league records in the 5000 after winning the event with a time of 14:17.49. That shaved nearly 14 seconds off his own school record of 14:31.37, which he established while earning All-American honors at the NCAA Championships last year. It also cut over three seconds off the previous CAC mark of 14:21.09, which was set by York (Pa.)'s Tim Hartung in 2014.
Â
Following his historic run in the 5000, Reid returned to the track and broke the 3000 record as well. During the event, he registered another victory with a time of 8:25.50. That topped his own school mark of 8:33.12 set last year.
Â
Along with Reid's record-setting runs, Dover set a new school and conference standard in the mile. Crossing the line in 4:07.77, he sliced over three seconds off his own record of 4:10.85, which he set last year.
Â
In addition to the standard-bearers, several other Captains moved up the program's all-time performance lists. Dover jumped to third all-time in the 3000 after clocking in at 8:34.90, while
Daniel Read moved to seventh in the event (8:42.58).
Cavanaugh McGaw also added CNU's 10th-fastest mark in the mile after finishing the event in 4:20.68.
 Â
In other distance events,
Cullen Monahan won the 800 in 1:58.54, while
Matthew Hrncir and
William Ward added top-10 efforts as well. The women also placed three runners in the top-10 of the 800, led by
Monica Lannen, who came in fourth in 2:26.37. Later,
Xiomara Enz and
Shannon Woods came in seventh and eighth, respectively.
Â
Showcasing a bright future in the pole vault as well, Christopher Newport had three freshmen register top-10 all-time efforts in the discipline.
Rose Wyant and
Kyra Ziegler tied for the fourth-highest clearance at the meet after topping 2.75 meters. That ranks as the 10th-highest mark in program history. Meanwhile,
Allan Pedin eclipsed 4.25 meters, which stands 10th on the men's all-time charts.
Â
Leading the way in the throwing events,
Brendon Burrows won the shot put with a 14.95-meter heave and came in fifth in the weight throw with a 13.57-meter toss. Reigning All-American
Hannah Shoemaker also notched the meet's top throw among Division III competitors in both disciplines. She fired a 12.40-meter effort in the shot put and a 14.01-meter heave in the weight throw.
Â
Among other top performers on Saturday,
Jessica Lee came in third in the 5000 (19:24.32), while
Kellie Hyde placed fourth in the mile (5:39.63).Â
Lauryn Helstrom also added a fourth-place showing in the high jump with a 1.55-meter clearance, and
Ryan Scott qualified for the finals of the men's 60-hurdles following a top time of 8.36 during the prelims.
"I was really pleased to see how the team performed," said head coach
Tyler Wingard. "After such a great Cross Country season, we were hoping the guys were going to be able to hold their form long enough to make a splash this weekend - and they did! The veterans in the throws and hurdles did a nice job kicking their season off, and we saw some really great starts from our freshmen in every event group. Now they get to focus on their finals, spend some time with family, and be excited for what 2018 has in store."
