LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Christopher Newport track & field teams concluded an impressive weekend with a handful of top-flight efforts on Saturday during the final day of the VMI Invitational at the Corps Physical Training Facility in Lexington, Virginia.
Leading the way,
Daniel Young became just the seventh Captain to eclipse 15 meters in the shot put after posting a 15.03-meter heave. That equaled the fifth-longest toss in program history, matching throws by current teammate
Tyler Palmer and former legend
Dante Ntiganzwa. It also placed him seventh in the field and first among Division III throwers on Saturday
On the women's side,
Sydney Trussell and
Ellie Nuckols each notched the top effort by a Division III competitor at the meet. Nuckols finished seventh among all runners with a 58.93 mark in the 400, while Trussell placed 10th in the field in the 200 with a time of 26.02. Both of those clockings moved them to first on the conference leaderboard this year as well.
In other events on the track,
Josie Brumfield led the Captains with a time of 2:28.48 in the 800, while
Lena Blagg threw down a mark of 11:10.61 in the 3000, which ranked first in her heat by over five seconds.
The men also had several standouts in the distance events.
Taylor Dalton completed the 800 in 1:59.53, just edging out teammate
Luke Tompkins, who finished four-hundredths of a second later.
Evan Young also registered the team's top time in the mile with a 4:29.95 finish.
Christopher Newport will return to action on January 31 for the start of the Patriot Games & Combined Events in Fairfax, Virginia.
