VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Christopher Newport track & field teams notched seven victories and registered several historic performances during the Oceanfront Invitational on Saturday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
During the meet,
Eliza Dana and
Daniel Young both climbed up the program's all-time charts in their respective events. Dana clocked in at 5:16.46 in the women's mile, which marked the eighth-fastest time in school history. Young also jumped to eighth in the men's shot put after winning the event with a 14.37-meter launch.
Along with Young, the Captains continued to star in the throwing events.
Dante Ntiganzwa and
Katie Stevens remained undefeated in the weight throw this year with their work on Saturday. Ntiganzwa won the men's event with a 16.50-meter toss, while Stevens snatched the women's title with a 16.10-meter heave.
In other field events,
Wade Dunkelberger captured the men's high jump with a 2.03-meter clearance. That equaled his PR and matched the third-highest mark in program history.
CJ Reeders also nabbed the men's triple jump with a 13.80-meter distance, while
Logan Bishop was the runner-up in the pole vault after topping 3.65 meters. In addition to her work in the weight throw, Stevens also added a second-place finish in the shot put with a 12.28-meter effort.
On the track,
Daniel Ferrante and
Evan Young posted victories in a pair of distance events. Ferrante ran away with the mile in 4:23.06. Meanwhile, Young took the 3000 in 8:59.90.
Among other team-best times on the men's side,
Johnny Atienza placed second in the 800 (1:57.90),
Ben Hager was third in the 400 (51.53), and
Marshall Mattison threw down a time of 23.74 in the 200. Additionally, in preliminary races,
Daniel Fox notched a mark of 7.08 in the 60, and
Logan Pena-Bandalo completed the 60-hurdles in 9.07.
For the women,
Sydney Trussell was sixth in both the 200 (25.70) and 400 (59.97), while
Madi Rawlings matched that finish in the 3000 (11:18.62). In other events,
Courtney Mudd added a time of 2:26.48 in the 800,
Grace Damewood wrapped up the 60 prelims in 8.78, and
Ellie Nuckols clocked in at 9.45 in the 60-hurdles.
Later, Nuckols anchored the 4x400-relay and teamed up with Mudd,
Jessica Hendricks, and
Elizabeth Lacombe on a time of 4:24.88. Meanwhile, the men's foursome of Ferrante, Hager,
Eli Wilson, and
Ben Nitzsche completed the relay in 3:39.95.
Rounding out the team-best performances on Saturday,
Ashley Eley was fifth in the women's high jump (1.52 meters) and eighth in the long jump (4.89 meters), while
Ainsley Miller placed third in the pole vault after eclipsing 3.05 meters.
Leo Brennan also secured a fifth-place showing in the men's long jump with a 6.53-meter distance.
Christopher Newport will return to action on January 26 for the start of the Camel City Invitational at the JDL Fast-Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
