Final Results
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In their final home meet of the spring season, the Christopher Newport track & field teams won nine events and starred throughout the New Captains Classic on Friday and Saturday at TowneBank Stadium.
Headlining the action,
Alyssa Roach made her first appearance in the heptathlon since placing 16th in the combined event during the NCAA Championships last year. During the two-day gauntlet, the senior star compiled a score of 4,268, which currently stands sixth in the country. Dominating on the track, she posted the top time in the 100-hurdles (14.62), 200 (26.70), and 800 (2:33.44).
In field events, Roach recorded the finest effort in the long jump (5.44 meters). Rounding out her day, she cleared 1.44 meters in the high jump, landed an 8.23-meter throw in the shot put, and fired the javelin 22.57 meters.
Along with Roach,
Katie Stevens continued to shine in the throwing events. On Friday, she won the hammer with a 42.95-meter toss, which equaled the sixth-finest throw in school history. Less than 24 hours later, she added another historic mark in the discus after winning the event with a 38.38-meter launch. That also marked the sixth-best showing by a Captain.
Along with her all-time efforts, Stevens added the squad's top mark on Saturday in the shot put with an 11.42-meter performance after unloading a 24.76-meter heave in the javelin on Friday.
While Stevens was starring in the throws, the men's distance runners were stockpiling victories on the track.
Daniel Ferrante took the 800 in 1:57.11, while
Joe Negron added the top mark in the 3000-steeplechase with a time of 11:02.40.
Nick Tolarchyk also captured the 1500 in 4:09.50, just edging out
John Vogel, who finished in 4:09.52.
In shorter events,
Daniel Fox won the men's 100 in 10.71, while
Adrianna DeSantis captured the women's 200 in 25.98. Fox also teamed up with
Perry Spring,
John Laser, and
Cooper Albright on a triumph in the 4x400-relay after capping off the meet in 3:28.86.
On other relays, Spring, Fox,
CJ Reeders, and
Kyle Lesko were second in the 4x100 (43.08), while DeSantis,
Mae Savoie,
Eleanor Eungard, and
McKenzie Hurley placed second in the women's 4x400 (4:24.46).
Among other top-finishers on the track,
Gustavo Leitao was second in the men's 400-hurdles (57.33) and fourth in the 110-hurdles (17.10). Meanwhile, for the women,
Sarah Kinka placed third in the 3000 (12:06.60), Savoie was fourth in the 800 (2:23.05), and
Lindsey Stirling came in fifth in the 100 (13.05). Additionally,
Michelle Valcich added a time of 5:18.81 in the 1500, while
Alex Guzman led the team in the long jump (4.57 meters).
The men registered a slew of second-place finishes on Friday evening.
Tom Foti was the runner-up in the 10,000 (35:19.43), while
Dante Ntiganzwa and
Jack Armel both shined in throwing events. Ntiganzwa was second in the hammer (43.57 meters), and Armel matched that showcase in the javelin (43.50 meters). Additionally, on Saturday,
Ethan Anderson came in second in the high jump (1.90 meters), while
Tyler Palmer added an identical finish in the shot put (13.35 meters) before coming in third in the discus (38.85 meters).
Rounding out the men's top efforts,
Brandon Peterson landed a distance of 6.02 meters in the long jump, and
Nick Thomas chipped in with a 12.97-meter mark in the triple jump. On the track, Laser wrapped up the 200 in 23.49, and
Leo Brennan completed the 400 in 53.20.
Christopher Newport will return to action on April 14 for the first day of the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic in Lynchburg.
