LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Christopher Newport track & field teams wrapped up the first day of action at the Keydet Invitational with a slew of top-five finishes and a historic effort by
Mazie Clark on Friday at the VMI Corps Physical Training Facility in Lexington.
Headlining the meet, Clark became the 10th Captain in program history to eclipse 13 meters in the women's weight throw. During the event, she unloaded a 13.12-meter launch, which marked the top effort by a Division III competitor on Friday. It also stands as the finest throw in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference this season.
In other field events,
CJ Reeders placed second in the men's triple jump with a 13.88-meter leap, while
Amir Siders was fourth in the weight throw with a 14.70-meter toss. On the women's side, three Captains registered fourth-place finishes as
Peyton Blanding cleared 3.20 meters in the pole vault,
Alyssa Roach topped 1.55 meters in the high jump, and
Grace Damewood added a 10.26-meter showcase in the triple jump.
In addition to her work in the high jump, Roach also qualified for the finals of the 60-hurdles after posting a time of 9.91 in the prelims. Meanwhile,
Adrianna DeSantis won her heat in the 400 with a 1:02.06 clocking, and
Chloe Martin placed first in her flight in the 1000 after crossing in 3:23.38. Earlier in the day, DeSantis also added an 8.18 mark in the 60 prelims.
Over longer distances, two Captains finished in the top-five in the women's 5000.
Maggie Ralston was the runner-up in 19:33.82, and
Libby Miles was third in 20:00.51.
Logan Funk,
Eliza Dana,
Mae Savoie, and
Mckenzie Hurley also came in third in the DMR after registering a time of 13:01.15.
The men also had impressive success in the distance events on Friday.
Eric Speeney finished second in the 5000 with a time of 15:37.52, while
Nick Tolarchyk came in fourth in 15:48.29.
Brenton Duvall also placed fifth in the 1000 after clocking in at 2:42.32, while
Clark Edwards,
Cooper Albright,
Nathanael Ferrante, and
Daniel Ferrante teamed up for a time of 10:40.08 in the DMR. That ranked fourth in the field.
Rounding out Friday's standouts,
Brandon Berry led the team in a pair of sprints. He posted the top time by a Division III competitor in the 60 prelims after finishing in 7.28. Later, he came in seventh overall in the 400 with a 52.70 mark.
