CHESTER, Pa. -- The Christopher Newport track & field teams will make another push to qualify individuals for the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Championships when the Captains travel to Chester, Pennsylvania for the Widener Final Qualifier on Monday at the George A. Hansell Track.
In addition to their trip to Widener, CNU will also take part in the Mount Union Final Qualifier & Combined Events beginning on Wednesday in Alliance, Ohio. That will serve as the program's final tune-up before the NCAA Championships, which begin on May 21 at the Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
Once the nation's last remaining qualifiers wrap up on Thursday, the country's top-22 declared student-athletes in every individual event will earn a spot at the national competition. A final list of the meet's participants will be published on the NCAA's official website by 8 p.m. on Friday.
Currently, five Captains are ranked in the top-50 nationally in at least one event. Headlining that group,
Ellie Nuckols sits among the top performers in the country in three different disciplines. The junior star is 10th in the NCAA in the heptathlon, 25th in the 400-hurdles, and 32nd in the 100-hurdles.
Fellow third-year standout
Ashley Eley also stands 30th in the triple jump and 45th in the high jump. Meanwhile, on the men's side,
Dylan Filipowicz is 21st in the javelin,
Daniel Young is 41st in the shot put, and
Leo Brennan ranks 43rd in the long jump.
Overall, 27 Captains will be making the trek to the Widener Final Qualifier on Monday. Many of them will look to build upon their work at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships last week. During the title meet, Christopher Newport won 10 individual conference crowns.
Headlining the award-winning champions, Nuckols was recognized as the Women's Track Athlete of the Meet after winning the 400-hurdles in 1:02.81. That established a new championship meet record. Meanwhile,
Seth Morris was named the Men's Field Athlete of the Meet after sweeping the shot put and hammer.
As they have all year, the Captains dominated the throwing events during the league meet. Freshman phenom
Kayla Asprey won the women's discus and shot put, while
Rylee Ehrett added a first-place finish in the hammer. Filipowicz also nailed down the men's javelin with a 56.53-meter missile.
Rounding out last week's victors, Brennan and Eley swept the triple jump titles, while
Andrew Janetsky claimed the 10,000.
