FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Behind 14 victories and a pair of historic efforts, the Christopher Newport track & field teams orchestrated a solid showing in their final tune-up before the Coast-to-Coast Conference Championships as the Captains starred on Saturday during the UMW Eagle Invitational at the Battleground Athletic Complex.

Winning the majority of events in which they entered at least one competitor, the Captains pieced together a well-balanced effort during the meet. Headlining the action, Mazie Clark and Joe Kilama both climbed the program's all-time charts in a throwing event.

On the men's side, Kilama won the hammer with a 44.53-meter heave. That moved him to eighth on the program's all-time performance list. Meanwhile, in the women's shot put, Clark unloaded an 11.90-meter toss, which established a new PR and marked the ninth-best effort by a Captain.

In addition to his work in the hammer, Kilama won the discus with a 39.30-meter launch. CJ Reeders also chipped in with a pair of victories in individual events. The second-year star captured the long jump with a 6.44-meter effort before winning the triple jump with a 14.07-meter distance.

Meanwhile, on the track, Javi Haworth won the 100 (11.57), Brandon Berry took the 200 (22.60), and Dainen Brass ran away with the 400 (50.95). Rounding out the men's victors, Will Saunders finished the 1500 in 4:05.83, while Sam Akers completed the 400-hurdles in 1:00.02.

Similar to the men, the women also starred in the sprints. Abigail Schugeld cruised to a victory in the 100 with a time of 13.81. That edged out teammate Baylee Hodson, who finished second in 13.97. Meanwhile, Hannah Gentrup took the 200 in 28.00, while Schugeld was second in 28.33. Later, Gentrup, Schugeld, Casey Yenyo, and Ainsley Miller teamed up for a time of 4:34.58 in the 4x400-relay.

Along with the track standouts, Zoe Stauffer captured the women's javelin with a 36.86-meter toss.

Among other top finishers during the meet, Clark coupled her win in the shot put with a second-place showing in the hammer (37.96 meters). For the men, Colby Baker was second in the high jump (1.65 meters), while Philip Burrell was the runner-up in both the javelin (38.33 meters) and 110-hurdles (16.96). Ahmed Elzamzami was also second in the 800 after clocking in at 2:05.09.

Christopher Newport will now set its sights on the Coast-to-Coast Conference Outdoor Championships, which will be held at Salisbury beginning on April 30.
