NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Competing in only a handful of events on the opening day of the New Captains Classic, the Christopher Newport track & field teams made the most of their limited action as the Captains dominated in a variety of disciplines on Friday at TowneBank Stadium.
Headlining the action,
Dylan Filipowicz won the javelin with a historic heave. The first-year star unloaded a 61.25-meter missile, which marked the second-longest toss in school history. It fell just short of Ed McSweeney's record-setting launch of 61.95 meters in 1977. Overall, he shattered his previous PR by over 25 feet and joined McSweeney as the only Captains to eclipse 200 feet in the event.
In addition to vaulting him up the program's all-time performance list, Filipowicz's throw also marked the 13th-longest toss in the NCAA this year.
In other throwing events,
Seth Morris moved to fourth on Christopher Newport's all-time charts in the men's hammer after winning the competition with a 53.44-meter toss. Meanwhile, on the women's side,
Sadie Forde was the runner-up in the javelin (29.59 meters), and
Rylee Ehrett came in third in the hammer (46.02 meters).
The Captains also kicked off the combined events with a series of historic efforts on Friday. In the heptathlon,
Ashley Eley won the high jump with a 1.63-meter clearance, which was the third-highest in school history and the finest mark by a Captain since 2014.
Ellie Nuckols also came in second in the event with a 1.60-meter showing. That moved her to seventh on the all-time charts.
Along with her performance in the high jump, Nuckols won the 100-hurdles in 14.66, which vaulted her to 10th on CNU's all-time performance list. Rounding out her day, the third-year star added the heptathlon's top marks in both the shot put (9.98 meters) and 200 (25.55).
With her well-rounded afternoon, Nuckols concluded the day in first-place in the heptathlon with 2,988 points. Meanwhile, Eley finished the first four events with a score of 2,690, while
Bailey Billger was third overall with 2,138 points.
On the men's side,
Jahi Jemison recorded the top performance in three of the first five events in the decathlon. During a jam-packed day of action, he captured the 100 (11.12) and long jump (6.18 meters) while tying
Sam Anania for the top clearance in the high jump (1.72 meters). Equally impressive,
Kendrick Matheny won the other two disciplines after uncorking a 9.77-meter throw in the shot put before completing the 400 in 52.69.
Overall, Jemison finished the day at the top of the leaderboard with 3,144 points, while Anania (2,925) and Matheny (2,861) followed close behind.
Rounding out Christopher Newport's finest performers on Friday,
Luke Tompkins led the squad in the men's 5000 after crossing the line in 16:38.17. That placed him sixth in the field.
CNU will return to action on Saturday with the final day of the New Captains Classic beginning at 11 a.m.
