LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Headlining a series of historic efforts by the Captains,
Ellie Nuckols starred in the hurdles while leading the Christopher Newport track & field teams to another solid day of work at the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic on Saturday at Lynchburg's Shellenberger Field & Dr. Jack M. Toms Track.
During the competition, Nuckols solidified her spot on the NCAA leaderboard in both the 100- and 400-hurdles. In the latter event, the junior speedster set a new personal-best after crossing the line in 1:02.44. That marked the fifth-fastest clocking in school history and the ninth-best effort in the nation this year.
Earlier in the day, Nuckols was equally impressive in the 100-hurdles. During the race, she broke the 15-second barrier for the first time in her career after wrapping up the competition in 14.90. That was the top effort by a Captain in three years. It also launched her into the top-50 on this year's national charts.
Flashing her versatility on Saturday, Nuckols also set a new outdoor PR in the high jump after clearing 1.50 meters. Additionally, she joined forces with
Annaka Busenlehner,
Danielle Hollington, and
Bailey Billger on a sixth-place showing in the 4x100-relay (49.22).
Christopher Newport continued to collect historic efforts in the throwing events as well. For the women,
Kayla Asprey led all Division III competitors with a 39.21-meter launch in the discus. That moved her to fifth on the program's all-time performance list. Meanwhile, for the men,
Daniel Young added nearly eight inches to his personal-best in the shot put while winning the event with a 16.08-meter missile. That marked the third-longest toss in school history. Additionally,
Bradley Stine jumped to 10th on CNU's all-time charts in the discus with a 45.81-meter heave.
In other field events, Asprey came in third in the shot put (12.03 meters), while
Ashley Eley had an identical finish in the women's triple jump (11.38 meters). For the men,
Langley Forte was fourth in the triple jump (13.51 meters), and
Jahi Jemison matched his PR in the high jump after finishing ninth with a 1.80-meter clearance.
On the track, Hollington led the Captains in both the 200 (26.63) and 400 (1:00.48) along with her excellent work on the relay unit. Meanwhile, Busenlehner was 11th in the 100 (12.74). Over longer distances,
Katherine Streeter posted the meet's fifth-best time in the 3000-steeplechase (12:42.09), and
Sarah Bland finished 10th in the 800 (2:23.16).
On the men's side, Jemison teamed up with
Marshall Mattison,
Eli Wilson, and
Miles Allen on a fourth-place showing in the 4x100-relay (42.24). Later, Jemison also came in 11th in the 110-hurdles (15.99), while Wilson was 10th in the 400 (49.78).
Among other top-10 performers,
Kaiden Brewer placed fifth in the 3000-steeplechase (10:20.29), and
Darrin Gallegos-Perches was 10th in the 400-hurdles (59.00). In other races,
Jacob Diehl paced the squad in the 100 (11.27),
John Laser led the Captains in the 200 (22.78), and
Luke Tompkins threw down the team's top clocking in the 800 (1:58.00).
