FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- After piecing together a historic showcase at the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic on Saturday, Christopher Newport track & field star
Ellie Nuckols was celebrated as the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week, which was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
The weekly award was the third of the year for Nuckols. Previously, she was recognized as the Track Athlete of the Week on January 19 before earning an honor for her performance in field events on February 2.
Overall, Nuckols has now received eight career Track & Field Athlete of the Week citations. That is the fifth-most in school history, trailing only
Katie Stevens (17), Logan Harrington (11), Alyssa Roach (11), and Daniel Fox (9).
Nuckols received her latest award after making history in the hurdles on Saturday at Lynchburg's Shellenberger Field & Dr. Jack M. Toms Track. In the 400-hurdles, she clocked in at 1:02.44, which established a new personal-best and marked the fifth-fastest time in program history. It also was the top effort by a Captain since 2011.
Meanwhile, on a national level, Nuckols' performance moved her to 11th on this year's NCAA leaderboard. Additionally, her clocking was the top mark in the conference this spring by over four seconds.
Equally impressive in the 100-hurdles, the junior speedster broke the 15-second barrier for the first time in her career. In the end, Nuckols wrapped up the race in 14.90, which was the top performance by a Captain in three years.
Along with her work over the weekend, Nuckols has been orchestrating a memorable junior campaign. Over the winter, she hauled in All-American nods in the pentathlon to go along with five All-Region awards. Meanwhile, during the fall, she served as a starter on the field hockey team while helping the Captains advance to the NCAA Final Four.
Nuckols and the rest of her teammates will return to action on Friday for the start of the two-day New Captains Classic at TowneBank Stadium.
