Final Results // High School Captains Classic Results
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Brendon Burrows and
Jeff Dover set a pair of school records, while several other Captains came through with historic efforts as the Christopher Newport track & field teams pieced together a tremendous performance on Saturday during the Blue & Silver Challenge at POMOCO Stadium.
Kicking off the record-setting efforts, Dover established a new school mark in the 5000. The All-American speedster won the race with a time of 14:35.06. That shaved over seven seconds off the previous standard of 14:42.96, which was established by teammate
Grayson Reid in 2017.
Equally impressive on Saturday, Burrows starred in the discus. The senior unleashed a 50.81-meter heave with his last throw to win the event. With that effort, he eclipsed the previous CNU record of 49.74 meters, which was set by teammate
Legend Hayes last year.
"We had good conditions and a quality meet to wrap up March," said head coach
Tyler Wingard. "The throwers were really impressive as a group, accounting for 12 of the team's 31 PRs.
Brendon Burrows' mark in the Discus was better than what got him to nationals last spring. The distance group had another great day - en mass in the 1500m (10 PRs) and fast early-season times on the national level from
Jeff Dover in the 5k and from Cav McGaw and
Monica Lannen in the 800m."
Absolutely dominant in the throwing events, Burrows' record-setting throw was one of several top-notch efforts. He also won the shot put with a 15.39-meter throw, which ranks third in school history. Meanwhile, Hayes moved to sixth all-time in the event with a 14.80-meter toss, while
Carlos Bazan-Alfaro jumped to eighth with a 14.02-meter heave.
Along with his second-place showing in the shot, Hayes also was the runner-up in two other disciplines. He finished second in the discus with a 48.66-meter toss and also made a little history in the hammer. The senior posted a team-best 52.05-meter throw on Saturday, which stands as the second-best mark in program history.
Rounding out the squad's top throwers,
Sarah Johnson starred on the women's side. The junior moved to fifth in program history in the shot put with a 13.00-meter showing. She also won the discus (40.01 meters) and finished second in the hammer (38.70 meters).
In distance events, the Captains made their mark in several disciplines.
Kathryn Wilson won the 3000-steeplechase in 12:21.44, which ranks 10th all-time at CNU.
Monica Lannen also climbed to sixth in program history in the 800 after crossing the line in 2:17.14. Meanwhile, on the men's side,
Cavanaugh McGaw registered the school's fourth-fastest clocking in the 800 (1:53.03), and
Daniel Cretney vaulted to seventh all-time in the 5000 (15:06.13).
In addition to the history-makers,
Peyton Artz finished first in the 1500 (3:59.16),
Ryan Scott won the 110-hurdles (15.13), and
Kurt Waller beat the field in the 400 (49.22). Waller, McGaw, Scott, and
Cullen Monahan also claimed the crown in the 4x400-relay after finishing in 3:19.32.
Hannah Bowden and
Paige Travers showed their versatility on the women's side as well. Bowden came in second in the 100-hurdles (15.66) and fourth in the high jump (1.50 meters), while Travers was second in the triple jump (10.56 meters) and fourth in the long jump (4.86).
Jessica Brownell came in third in the pole vault after eclipsing 2.75 meters as well.
Christopher Newport will return to action with the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg beginning on April 5.
