ROME, Ga. -- Capping off the 2018 campaign, the Christopher Newport men's cross country team placed fifth at the South / Southeast Regional Championships, while the women came in eighth at the title meet on Saturday afternoon at Berry College's Clara Bowl.

On the men's side, CNU posted a score of 155, which placed the squad fifth in the region. Rhodes came away with the title after collecting 71 points, while Emory, Berea, and Washington & Lee rounded out the top-four. Meanwhile, the women placed eighth with 186 points. Emory won the title with a score of 83. Centre, Washington & Lee, Trinity, and Berry capped off the top-five.

Placing three runners on the All-Region squad, the men pieced together a well-balanced team effort on Saturday.
Cavanaugh McGaw led the 8k contingent with an 18th-place showing in 26:22.78.
Jason Putnam and
Joey Lightbody also added decorated efforts as Putnam came in 31st (26:40.97) and Lightbody was 33rd (26:42.62).

The All-Region honors were the second for both McGaw and Putnam. Lightbody earned the distinction for the first time in his career.

Christopher Newport also placed three other runners in the top-50.
Daniel Cretney was 36th (26:52.57),
Clark Edwards was 37th (26:54.81), and
Michael Carrico completed the race in 44th (27:10.62). Capping off the squad's top-seven,
Trejon Edmonds crossed the line in 28:42.32.

The women were led by a pair of All-Region runners.
Monica Lannen posted CNU's top finish after placing 14th in the 6k with a 23:23.14 clocking.
Jessica Lee was close behind in 24th after completing the race in 23:41.33. The All-Region honor was the first for Lannen, while Lee was celebrated for the third straight season.

Along with the decorated contingent,
Logan Funk and
Samantha Dickerson also posted top-50 efforts on Saturday. Funk led the first-year competitors with a 24:26.87 clocking, which placed her 42nd in the field. Dickerson came in eight spots later after crossing in 50th in 24:38.90.

Rounding out the squad's top-seven,
Kellie Hyde placed 60th (24:50.68),
Magdalena Ralston was 76th (25:16.19), and
Natalie Prye finished 116th (26:19.47).
