CNU Cross Country Travels to California for Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday

Live Results

SUNNYVALE, Calif. --
Contending for league supremacy this weekend, the Christopher Newport cross country teams will take part in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships, which will be held on Saturday at Baylands Park in Sunnyvale, California.

The men will head out for the 8k at 10 a.m. PST, while the women's 6k will begin one hour later. For those fans unable to attend the meet, live results will be available at GoSlugs.com. A direct link can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

At the meet, the Captains will test themselves against the top competitors from around the conference. Along with CNU, UC Santa Cruz, Mary Washington, Regent, and Salisbury will all take part in the competition.

Entering the title meet, the Banana Slugs are the four-time defending champions in both races. So far this season, UC Santa Cruz is ranked 27th nationally on the men's side, while the women are 30th in the country.

Equally impressive in their own right, the Captains feature a pair of regionally-ranked squads. The women are currently sixth in the South, while the men are eighth. Meanwhile, among other teams, Mary Washington is 10th in the South on the men's side, while Salisbury boasts a pair of top-10 crews in the Mid-Atlantic Region. The Sea Gulls feature the sixth-ranked men's team and the ninth-best women's squad.

Last year, Christopher Newport finished second in the team standings in the men's 8k, while the women were third in the 6k. CNU most recently won a league title on the women's side in 2019, while the men wrapped up a three-peat in 2017.

The men feature four runners who secured All-Conference accolades for their work during last year's competition. Clayton Rankin led the Captains with a sixth-place showing at Lee Hall Mansion in 2024, while Luke Tompkins was close behind in seventh. Later, Andrew Janetsky finished ninth and was hailed as the league's Rookie of the Year, while Tom Foti placed 11th.

In addition to last year's honorees, Evan Young was also a second-team All-League selection for his performance during the 2023 championships, which were also held at Baylands Park in California.

Christopher Newport also features a decorated contingent of veterans on the women's side. Sarah Dake and Lena Blagg both garnered All-Conference recognition last year. Dake was a first-team honoree after placing seventh in the field, while Blagg picked up second-team plaudits with a 16th-place finish.

Along with last year's stars, Courtney Mudd was a second-team selection in 2023 when she placed 13th at the competition in California.

Overall, nine current Captains are returning to Baylands Park after completing the course during the 2023 championships. For the men, Young (26:07.1), Tompkins (26:08.8), Foti (26:29.2), and Rankin (26:39.4) all posted sub-27-minute times, while Taylor Dalton came in 30th overall with a 27:10.2 mark. On the women's side, Mudd finished the 6k in 23:03.3, while Dake (24:08.4), Kayla Lopez (24:13.3), and Josie Brumfield (24:44.8) all had top-30 performances.

Following their trip to California, Christopher Newport will be back in action on November 15 with the NCAA South Regionals at Green Hill Park in Salem, Virginia.
