FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- For his impressive efforts both in and out of the classroom, Christopher Newport standout
Kevin Farnsworth was hailed as the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year, which was announced by the league office on Thursday afternoon.
With the award, Farnsworth became the first member of the men's cross country program to receive the prestigious honor. Previously, former star Mae Savoie hauled in the women's accolade in 2022.
The league-wide award is bestowed annually on the student-athlete who has achieved the highest levels of excellence both athletically and academically. Honorees must be either a junior or senior with at least a cumulative 3.50 GPA while serving as a top-seven member of the cross country program.
In his third year at Christopher Newport, Farnsworth has established himself as a shining example of a standout student-athlete. Majoring in computer science and economics, the McLean, Virginia native boasts a perfect GPA while stockpiling awards for his academic endeavors. He is already a two-time Academic All-Conference honoree and a reigning member of the CSC Academic All-District Team.
Just as impressive in his athletic pursuits, Farnsworth put together his finest year with the cross country team in the fall. At the NCAA South Regionals, the junior capped off the season by setting a personal-best in the 8k after clocking in at 26:43.7. That placed him 57th overall and helped the Captains nail down a top-10 team finish.
Along with his work at the regional competition, he placed 33rd at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships with a time of 26:52.8. Earlier in the year, he also added back-to-back top-25 efforts after coming in 17th at the CNU Invitational and 22nd at the Don Cathcart Invitational.
In five appearances in the 8k during the fall, Farnsworth eclipsed the 27-minute mark on four occasions. Showing consistent improvement throughout the year, he originally set a personal-best with a time of 26:44.6 at the Don Cathcart Invitational before topping that mark in the season finale at the regional championships. Additionally, he set course PRs at Lee Hall Mansion in Virginia, WinterPlace Park in Maryland, and the Gloucester County DREAM Park in New Jersey.
In addition to his work with the cross country team, Farnsworth is also an award-winning contributor on the track & field squad. As a freshman, he secured All-Conference and All-State accolades as a member of the Distance Medley Relay. Overall, he has five top-five finishes at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championships in his career, including a pair of fourth-place marks in the 800.
