Sarah Dake and Andrew Janetsky Shatter School Records as CNU Cross Country Orchestrates Historic Appearance at Spider Alumni Open

Final Results

MECHANICSVILLE, Va. --
Headlining a historic outing by the Captains, Andrew Janetsky established a new school record in the 6k, while Sarah Dake set a new standard in the 4k as the Christopher Newport cross country teams kicked off 2025 with a remarkable performance at the Spider Alumni Open on Saturday morning at Pole Green Park.

Leading the way, Dake became the first Captain in school history to run a sub-15-minute 4k. Cruising along the course, the third-year star wrapped up the event in 14:35.1. That sliced nearly a minute off her previous PR and shattered the program record of 15:06.1, which was established by former legend Mae Savoie at the exact same meet on September 3, 2022.

In the end, Dake's clocking ranked 27th during Saturday's race and was the fastest mark by a Division III competitor.

Meanwhile, on the men's side, Janetsky kicked off his sophomore season in spectacular fashion after finishing the 6k in 18:43.2. That trounced the previous school record of 18:57, which was set by longtime standout Ray Gamache at the Virginia Wesleyan Dual Meet on September 1, 2011. It also shaved over 30 seconds off Janetsky's previous PR of 19:20.5, which he established during last year's edition of the Spider Alumni Open.

Overall, Janetsky's performance placed him 25th in the field on Saturday and marked the fastest clocking by a Division III competitor.

Following the second-year star, two other Captains also jumped up the school's all-time leaderboard in the 6k. Evan Young finished 43rd in 19:15.9, which marked the fifth-fastest time in program history and cut over a minute off his previous PR of 20:41.2. Meanwhile, Clayton Rankin threw down a mark of 19:20.9. That ranked 48th on Saturday and moved him to sixth in CNU lore.

Just behind the top-three runners, Luke Tompkins was up next in 19:47.5. Incredibly, Christopher Newport's top-four performers were also the top-four finishers among Division III competitors at the meet.

Along with the front-runners, three other Captains placed in the top-100 on Saturday. Kevin Farnsworth was 84th in 20:19.3, Tom Foti came in 96th in 20:41.6, and TJ Brown led all first-year competitors with a mark of 20:42.1, which ranked 97th overall.

In addition to Dake's record-setting work in the 4k, several other women were equally impressive on Saturday. Among them, Kayla Lopez added her own historic footnote while placing 56th in the field. She completed the race in 15:04.7, which also topped the previous school record and moved her to second on the program's all-time charts.

After the history-makers, three Captains followed in a tight pack. Leading the next wave, Courtney Mudd finished 82nd in 18:34.5, which was nearly a 30-second drop from her time at last year's meet. Then, in immediate succession, Isabella Phillips crossed in 15:38.1, while Sarah Bland was up next in 15:38.6. Phillips' time was the top mark by a Division III freshman at the meet, while Bland's effort sliced over a minute off her previous PR.

Rounding out the squad's top-seven, Lena Blagg wrapped up the event in 16:01.3, and Katherine Streeter also demolished her PR by nearly a minute in 16:18.6.

In the end, the women's team posted a score of 240, which ranked first among Division III teams and eighth overall. Meanwhile, the men came in seventh - and first among Division III programs - with 202 points.

Christopher Newport will return to action on September 12 when the Captains host the CNU Invitational at Lee Hall Mansion.
